I happen to catch Zadie Smith's White Teeth on PBS. My feelings about the movie where just as mixed as my feelings about the novel. Thought it should have had subtitles- some of the accents were really thick. Did anyone else see it? |

I missed it but since you said it came on PBS there is a good chance it will be re-aired soon. I couldn't get through the book so I'd like to finish it by seeing the movie. |

Hi K, I tried to watch the first half but as you say, the accents were very thick. The mother was Chinese and had a British accent...I couldn't understand a word she was saying. I will either catch the rerun or rent it when it goes to video. I want to see it and hopefully I have more patience the second time around.

Susan,
The accents were really funny. I guess the thing that interest me the most is that as Americans the focus is always on Black and White. We fail to realize that the struggle to find our bearings in what's suppose to be a multicultural society goes a great deal further.
AK- The movie is a good bet if you didn't make it through the book. The movie stayed really close to the text. |

My wife and I saw the Mastrpiece Theater adaptation of White Teeth on PBS and really enjoyed it. The mother wasn't chinese but jamaican. I had no trouble with the accents. the presentation made us both decide to check out the novel. |

Hi Mike, I should have said the mother looked Chinese. She may have been born or naturalized in Jamaica but she looked like the Asian branch of her family tree wasn't that far up. I found their accents in the movie to be much thicker than what I hear on the BBC (America) network.
