Hey hey now...I just loaded up my MP3 player with that BAB of all BABs, The Emperor of Ocean Park and hope to listen to it either on the plane to BEA or around the house over the next few weeks.
Anyone listen to audiobooks?

I just can't get into Audio books. Something about creating and bringing the characters to life in my imagination that I really get a thrill out of doing and listening to Audio books takes this away from me. I'm always afraid that the sounds of the characters, the voices of the reader(s) won't be what my mind has imagined and I don't want to give this up.
The convenience of listening while stuck in Atlanta traffic is nice but I love to hold a book, read the words, turn the pages, see how far I've progressed in the book, anticipate the end that I get a thrill out of doing. I guess I'm still a bit old fashioned when it comes to books. |

I've tried over the years to listen to Audio Books but like you said, akaivyleaf, it's hard for me to visualize the scenes. Maybe my auditory senses just aren't sharp enough. I keep wanting to see words! It's hard for me to concentrate even on the Audio books made from two of my own books.
I guess I should keep trying to connect with Audio books, however. The day may come when we may not be able to see or hold books to read them; being able to at least hear them at that time will be a blessing. |

Hello All,
You know, akaivyleaf and Sis E, I used to feel the same way that you do about audio books, but I gave it a chance and I actually like them. However, I still prefer holding a book in my hand and turning the pages. I usually listen to audiobooks while working out, doing housework, or when I'm in the car alone. I'll admit that my mind wanders a lot more when listening to a book, compared to reading a book. I look at audiobooks as a way of getting a book "read" while I'm doing something else productive. It's like "killing two birds with one stone." :-)
Some of the audio books I've listened to recently are Parable of the Sower and Kindred (the best one so far) by Octavia Butler, Between Lovers by E.J. Dickey, The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, and Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck. I never buy audiobooks. I always get them from my local library. Therefore, I have a limited pool to select from. I am currently listening to Back Roads by Tawni O'Dell.
If I don't like the voice of the person reading the story (if they're speaking in monotone or whatever), I immediately stop listening. |

Hey Ladies...I see both sides to this. I love the look and feel of a book, but when an audiobook is read right, I can truly lose myself in it. It's like watching a movie with my eyes closed (i.e. listening to a movie). I'm able to take the words being spoken and come up with my own pictures to match it.
Most of the ones I listen to are the non-AA authors, but so far I've heard some pretty good ones. I love the ability to do a bunch of things at once (as Yvette mentioned). LOL.
And whew, I can't stand the monotone readers either. Those go right back to the library. I heard one a while back by Ruby Dee that was soooooooooo good! I'll have to try to look through my files to see what it was.
But I am going to give that BAB Emperor of Ocean Park a chance. :-)
My only suggestion to anyone willing to give them a try is to get the unabridged. The abridged versions are too short and leave out too much.

I agree with you regarding the unabridged audiobooks. I forgot to mention that in my earlier post. I don't do abridged books. If I'm going to take the time to listen to a book, I want the whole book, not just the portions that someone else thinks is important. |

Tee, whoever told you about Ruby Dee hit the nail on the head. I listened this weekend to Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and read by Ruby Dee and it was an excellent introduction to an audio book for me. As mentioned previously, my great fear of audio books but with Ms. Dee reading, her acting skills were quite apparant. She made every character come to life, the mental images of her reading were probably so much better than my poor brain could fathom. Here's hoping all audio books measure up to this gold standard. I hope I'm not placing too much stock in this and I'll be disappointed next round. |

Glad to hear you enjoyed it Sharon. I haven't listened to her read that one, but will definitely have to check it out.
