For all of you heavy readers/reviewers out there, I have a question. If you keep a database of some sort to track your books, what is the one feature that you can't do without? What feature do you wish you have, that you don't have right now? I'm trying to see how best to design my own program since I love Oracle and database management systems. Want to pick your brain about it. Thanks in advance...

Hmmmm, I have a wonderful program called Readerware. You can find information about it at: http://www.readerware.com/?AfID=12265 and it's what I use for my personal collection. It comes with a barcode that scans the ISBN stamp and it pulls the information from online sites. It's pretty cool and has a free 30 day trial.

But for the reviewers side of the house, I want something that will work hand-in-hand with my site. I'm sooooooooooo sick of doing a million HTML pages. I want to paste in text and see it pop up on my webpage, send it to the author, put it on Amazon.com, the WORKS!

Package up that bad boy akaivyleaf...I'll buy a copy. I need a content management system BAD. And one that I can work unlike the few that I've purchased and never got to work right. :-( And, to think I have a Computer Science degree. ROFL. I still don't know JACK about Oracle or Databases.

Hello akaivyleaf,

I don't have a system. I need one really, really bad. I have the scary suspicion that whatever system I have, I'm going to need a computer to handle just the database and nothing else. I do know that when I do find the right software, I'm going to have to hire somebody to do the data entry for me, a longterm part time job if there ever was one.

My ideal database would contain the normal fields: title, author, original publication date, edition, ISBN, author autographed, book description, location (I'm going to have to spread the books out to more than just one location), publisher, and my overall opinion of the book and if I wrote a review on it, I would include that as well. It sounds like a lot, doesn't it?

Thumper...check out Readerware and save the money on hiring someone...it is wonderful. But make sure you get the scanner or CueCat.

I could not live without "BookBag". It's a datbase that I have on my PDA. It has all the database features that a girl could want. "BookBag Plus" (http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=38277) has a desk top application that goes along with it so you can update it on the desktop and/or on the PDA. When I go into B&N, Walmart or anywhere, I just whip out the PDA and I have all of my book list info at hand.

Hello All,

Tee, I checked out the site you gave, and it sounds like something I can work with. Thanks.

You're welcome Thumper...hope it works for you. And I'm not sure if you have a desktop or laptop, but if you have both, load it on your laptop. That way you don't have to bring ALL your books over to your desk and go through it that way. Instead you can sit your laptop near your bookshelves and get to work.

I can't wait until we move, because my plan is to scan my books as I unpack them this time around since I only loaded a few into the Readerware software.

And Sandra...girl, now you have me looking at this BookBag software. I had a Palm once, but never used it, but boy could I use something like this when going into the store. I sometimes get over-excited about books and I end up buying more than one copy.

Sure wish you had brought this up before my Anniversary and Mother's Day. ROFL. My BDay is a loooooooooong way off. <grin> Thanks again.

-Tee
