On to another thread. LOL. I want to know if there are any books that just threw you around a time or two? You expected one thing to happen and the author flipped the script on you? Do you like or dislike that in a book?
I'll start off. In reading Momma's Baby, Daddy's Maybe, I assumed that the book was going one way and boy oh boy, Jamise Dames had some interesting twists in that book that had me dropping my mouth...all I could think was...OH NO SHE DIDN'T.
Let's hear it.

I'm kinda late reading Testimony by Felicia Mason but it is really throwing me for a loop right now. I just exclaimed to myself... "What just happened here" and in my morgue of an office I'm sure people are wondering who I'm talking to.
I like books that don't give me what I expect all the time. Makes reading more enjoyable. |

Hey akaivyleaf...I know you but under your real name I think...lol...I know you're one of my sorors tho'...cause who else would have the handle akaivyleaf but a skeewee! 
Anyway, I read Testimony by Felicia Mason and I really enjoyed the storyline and the subject matter: drama in the choir...cuss lawd knows that there is plenty of drama in many a choir. I like that she allowed each character to tell their story and yes one of the members (I can't remember her name now) really threw me for a loop. I think her name was Sally but I might be wrong. It was a good read and I really enjoyed it. |

You're late reading it akaivyleaf? Well, I haven't read it yet, but I can imagine your office thinking you're one of those crazies out there. ROFL. And I agree with your assessment. I like books that give me the unexpected.
And, another one I just thought about is Some Sunday by Margaret Johnson-Hodge. Thinking about that book now still makes me stop and reflect. Wow. I won't spoil it, but MJH can write!

Christopher Chambers - A Prayer for Deliverance - this book is off the chain. I must admit that I love murder and historical fiction, this book fuses both genres --yet it folds in contemporary issues and political intrigue. The end was a set-up for the next installment - however, the twist with the "cousins" and the past is something. All I can say is WOW
I might have to add this brother to my "favorite" list -- understand there aint but two folks on it - so this is an honor. Did I tell you he also writes erotica -- now this brother is one baddddd --- let me shut my mouth |

Has anyone read The Street by Ann Petry? I didn't see that ending coming at all--and I didn't like it one bit. |

Hello Booked,
I read The Street a few years ago for the first time. That ending was a humdinger!! I don't know of anyone who's read it and didn't come away pissed! If you get the chance, give Petry's The Narrows a try. It has a more likable ending. *smile* |

Off TOpic- Yasmine you know me by my real name? I'm definately a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha so that is a good thing. I see that you share my love of reading, everywhere I pop up, I see your name so we probably do "know" each other! We'll have to inquire further off list.
As far as TESTIMONY, I was impressed with the development of the characters and that each was an individual story, that intertwined. Ms. Mason demonstrated some skillz! |

akaivyleaf--glad to hear you liked Testimony. Several of the APOOO BookClub members read it and they didn't care for it as much as I did. I agree with your assessment of the book and gurl that ending were you ready for it?!?! I know I wasn't. I wonder if Mason will do a sequel. I don't normally care for sequels because they're usually not as good as the first book but I'm curious to know what happened with Sally (is that her name). |

All,
The two books that I remember right now that threw me for a loop were, Harlem Redux and The Queen of Harlem. I know something was going to be at the ending of each, one book was a mystery and the other based on the synopsis, but still the endings were surprising and I enjoyed both books.
Also Thumper and Booked, I also loved the book, The Street. I reread it last year for my f2f book club. My first reading was well over 10 years ago.

There was no character named Sally. I thought the book ended pretty well in that you did know what happened to all of the main players. The good, the bad and the ugly so to speak. Give me some specifics on "sally" and I'll try to remember which character you are describing |

Margaret was her name and the book did tell what happened to her. She is about the only one who could have a sequel though. |

Yes Margaret but as I recalled she was SHOCKED about her lover in the ending...and it led me to believe that she could seek revenge if she wanted to....hence a sequel. ;) |
