Hey, All...
I read Harlem Redux awhile back, and my mom just finished it today. We enjoyed it and yet both of us felt like we'd read the story or a similar one before. So, all you readers, does the book have elements of a popular book or movie from the past? Driving us both crazy and I convinced her I'd be able to get some help on aalbc.

The book did have that deja vu sense about it. I felt the same way, but after racking my brains, and then racking Linda's, I couldn't come up with it. It was like trying to hold smoke in my hands. If it comes to me, I'll drop a line. |

I too have racked my brain over this one and I'm also drawing a blank. The book had so many storylines that I can see how you might get a deja vu effect from it. The only thing I did come up with is the old Betty Davis movie in which she took on the life of her twin sister after her death. I can't remember if she killed her sister as in Harlem Redux or just stumbled upon her. I'm sure Thump remembers this movie. Anyway, that's all I have. |

I do know that Bette Davis movie you're referring to. I wasn't that impressed with it but I see your point. Your post did remind me of another movie, Hichtcock's Vertigo. That's it! It reminded me of Vertigo!! Carey, remember that one. James Stewart's college friend ask him to look after his wife, when in actuality he had killed his wife and his mistress masquerade as his wife to Jimmy stewart, and when it looked as if the "wife" committed suicide, the real wife was thrown off of a church roof. Could this be it? |

Hmmmm...I guess it had elements from quite a few film sources and a couple of the old "passing" books.
Maybe we should mark this thread as a SPOILER since quite a few plot points are given away.
Thanks for the info, I'll keep trying to pin it down. |

Hey Bayou Lights,
The name of the movie with Bette Davis that Carey spoke of was "A Stolen Life." There was also a book which was made into a TV movie by Judith Michaels(?)that came out a while ago about twins who swtiched places.One was a bored house wife and the other was a globe-trotting single girl. And a couple of years ago, I read a novel which took place during the Harlem Renaissance and had "Harlem" in its title. It was written by a black man and incorporated all of the plot elements typical of that era into the story-line. But no twins were involved. Unfortunately, I can't think of the exact name of the book. But it was apparently popular when it came out - because a whole lot of people had checked the it out from the library before I did. |
