Hey, Folks --
Back from some rest in Oahu, and ready to dig back into the board. Anyway, just read this from the Hollywood Reporter. Any thoughts? This book was my introduction to Ms. Zora and I plan to reread it this summer.

Zora Neale Hurston's classic 1937 novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is set to become the network's next entry in the "Oprah Winfrey Presents" telefilm series. Halle Berry is attached to star in the production, which is eyeing a summer start date for telecast next season. The project, long in development at ABC and Winfrey's Harpo Films, reunites Berry and Winfrey, who worked together when Berry starred in the 1998 "Oprah Winfrey Presents" telepic "The Wedding." Hailed as a masterpiece of black American literature, Hurston's "Eyes" traces the life of Janie Crawford, a free-spirited woman whose search for identity and happiness puts her in opposition to the mores of her small Florida town. Hey all,
I suppose there are some true Halle fans out there -- I aint one of 'em. I have to admit that Their Eyes... is an excellent work that will translate to film well - with the right crew. The Wedding and Beloved -- really did not "get it" for me -- the story were great -- unfortunately, they got lost in the translation to film.
Now -- look at Antone Fisher -- great book to film translation -- it all depends whose behind the camera and whose on the screen. I am all for -- "American Idol-esque" talent -- give an unknown a chance -- there are great community theaters brimming with talent -- yet to be discovered.

Well, Soul Sister, you know how tight Oprah and Halle are. And of course casting someone in the project who will boost TV ratings has to figure into the equasion. And, actually, I can see Halle in the role of Janie. I do agree, however, that a lot depends on who they get to direct. |

Hello All,
I'm with Soul Sister. I had hoped that it wasn't true, but I see that it is. I don't like Oprah's adaptation of novels. They're either poorly written or terribly miscast. Although, I must be the only one who liked Beloved, I still don't believe Oprah and her crew will do a good job. |

LOL...y'all are funny! This is one I'll be lined up for whoever plays in it. I think having Halle Berry in it will give it more "pull" but I would also love to see an unknown in it...always for the under-dog. <grin>
And Thumper, I enjoyed Beloved for the most part. Some parts were weird to me, but I understood it better the second time around.
The book? I don't think I ever finished the book...can't remember. LOL.

Or talent Chris, but I suppose I'll be shot for critiquing Oprah and her acting ability.
Lets put it this way, Oprah should stick to talk shows and leave acting to Actors. Its great and I admire that she has the desire to bring great literary works to the silver screen but something happens during the process that I just can't put my finger on.
I think "Their eyes" is a great book, I hope the movie doesn't detract from the story. |

I liked Halle in "Dorothy Dandridge" but thought she was awful in "Monster's Ball." She's not a heavyweight actress at all but she sure is marketable in the industry's eyes. I could see Angela Bassett or even Alfrie Woodard in the part of Janie. |

I have to disagree. Both Angela Bassett or Alfie Woodard are both too old for the part. And wasn't Janie light skinned? I would have picked Nicole Ari Parker from Soul Food myself. I like her. |
