I haven't read much African-American literature and was hoping for a suggestion. Carey and I talked in person on 1/9/03. We were introduced by Marc. I was hoping that he would suggest something. I am an avid reader. He or others can always email me directly as well. Thanks very much. --Karen M. |

Hello Karen,
I hope I can be of assisstance. I would start with Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Manchild In The Promised Land by Clarence Brown, The Street by Ann Petry, Black Boy by Richard Wright, Somebody Else's Child by Terris McMannis Grimes. I could go on and on. If you explore the site a little bit, we have loads and loads of books reviewed, being discussed, or profiled. Jump in whereever, the water is fine. |

My first African American book was My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due and that's what kept me interested in black literature and coming back to this book club. I must say this is an excellent site and some cool people here too. |

I have a great suggestion - Sacred Fire: The QBR 100 Essential Black Books edited by Max Rodriguez, et al. This is a great place to start. There are brief overviews of each title - its history, author and importance in African American literature and history.
As for the fiction -- that is sooooooooo subjective - but there are some great readers and pundits in here - so you will not get back advice. Best wishes
ps -- I would start with Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, Zora Hurston, Jessie Fauset, Ann Petry, Dorothy West -- and yes -- Chester Himes

My first African American reads were:
I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
Manchild in the Promised Land
I highly recommend both of these. Actually from the ages of 12-30, I read both of these books faithfully every year. LOL...there weren't very many books from people of color during that time so I stuck with what I knew and added some of the other classics along the way.
Someone also mentioned MSTK by Tananarive Due...I also recommend that book. Ms. Due is a prolific writer and I love her writing style. |
