BEA to Stay in NYC; Will Be Held Midweek
by Jim Milliot -- Publishers Weekly, 2/9/2009 3:37:00 PM

Reed Exhibitions has announced a number of major changes to the time and setting of future BookExpo America conventions. The annual meeting, set for New York May 29-31, will now also be held at New York’s Javits Center through 2012, a decision that scraps plans to hold BEA in Washington, D.C. in 2010 and in Las Vegas in 2011. And beginning next year, Reed will hold the convention entirely during the week under a compressed schedule.

This is deep.

I've heard that New York based publishers were scaling back acitivities during this years BEA.

I also understand many are backing out of the London and Frankfurt book fair (bascially recognizing them for the boondoggle they'd became for the attendees).

AALBC.com will not be exhibiting as we have in prioro years -- but that is an entirely different story.

We will host our annual Black Pack Party on Saturday, May 30th, here in the village of Harlem. I'm also thinging about hosting a little after party. Details forthcoming.

Hello,

I see that the major publishers are cutting positions and shutting down a number of imprints as well. How does this affect AA authors who are fortunate to still be published and those trying to break into the business?

I was talking to an author a few weeks ago and it is my understanding that more than a few authors were contracts were dropped. It appears that the well has run dry.
