Mo'nique is in the "Push" movie about the abused Harlem teen. So is Mariah Carey. Some have compared this "Push" to "The Color Purple."

I saw the other "Push" with my nephews yesterday. That one with Dakota Fanning and is an action packed "guy" movie which I would rate a "B"

Push: Based on the novel by Sapphire
US Narrative Feature Films
U.S.A., 2008, 105 mins., color

DESCRIPTION BIO SCREENINGS
With sheer audacity and utter authenticity, director Lee Daniels tackles Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire and creates an unforgettable film that sets a new standard for cinema of its kind. Precious Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) is a high-school girl with nothing working in her favor. She is pregnant with her father’s child—for the second time. She can’t read or write, and her schoolmates tease her for being fat. Her home life is a horror, ruled by a mother (Mo’Nique) who keeps her imprisoned both emotionally and physically. Precious’s instincts tell her one thing: if she’s ever going to break from the chains of ignorance, she will have to dig deeply into her own resources.Don’t be misled—Push is not a film wallowing in the stillness of depression; instead, it vibrates with the kind of energy derived only from anger and hope. The entire cast are amazing; they carry out a firestorm of raw emotion. Daniels has drawn from them inimitable performances that will rivet you to your seat and leave you too shocked to breathe. If you passed Precious on the street, you probably wouldn’t notice her. But when her story is revealed, as Daniels does in this courageous film, you are left with an indelible image of a young woman who—with creativity, humor, and ferocity—finds the strength to turn her life around.

Recipient of the Grand Jury Prize: U.S. Dramatic, the Audience Award presented by Honda: U.S. Dramatic, and A Special Jury Prize for Acting.

Gabourey Sidibe, Paula Patton, Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd, Lenny Kravitz

Tyler Perry must have something to do with this now because he said on The View they are changing the title to Precious..no doubt because of the other movie with the same title

Hi LiLi

You'll have to walk me through this one. I like drama but this sounds real thick. I don't know why I would want to see it. Maybe I'll check it out just to keep you in line.

Btw, tomorrow I "have" to go see Tyler Perry's latest ...pray for me.

Hello All,

Carey: Push, the book, is pretty close to the movie description, except its more horrific! In the book, Precious has AIDS, which she contracted from her father. The father who is a stone freak, had been abusing her for years while the mother allowed it believing that that was the only way she could get some from the daddy herself. Turns out that the daddy had been married the whole time with his other family with no intention of leaving them. I want to say that he dabbled on the other side of the fence which is how he got AIDS, but I can't positively remember. The mother is pure evil! The COW! She lays on the couch eating, getting bigger and bigger, abuses Precious. When Precious begins to get her life together, the mama tries to block her, but Precious has to go in order to make a life for her and her baby/sibling. The scene from Chinatown with Faye Dunaway going "she's my daughter, my sister, my daughter, my sister", should help you connect the dots. Whereas in most case a movie can do more to bring the visuals of a story to life, in this case the book has one definite advantage over the movie. The book screams of similarities between it and The Color Purple. Both books has the narrative style of using letters to tell the story. In Push's case, the letters or journal entries, are used as one way of showing Precious's maturity, self assurance and educational development. To say that the book is emotionally moving is an understatement.

All this to say, if there is any ass showing in the movie, it wont be tantalizing.

Hello

Wow Thump, that sounds like some deep mess. If they did it right, this could be a film for the ages. I don't know about the cast, I don't see great acting falling off the screen. If the director had his game tight, he could have a hit on his hands.

As you know, I used to go to the Teluride film festivals in Colorado, I wonder were this is going to be shown again before it hits the big screen. Do you know if it has a major distributor?

I like the journal and letters flashback thang ...if it's done right.

I was in the library yesterday and saw PUSH, checked it out and about to read it right quick. It's only 140 pages with what looks like some poetry and a couple of short stories in the back of the book.
