I know brothers should never e-mail while buzzed but peep this. I need to put the ultimate '80s R & B slow jam mix CD together. Can you help a brother out? What should I put on this CD? Ya'll remember that first slow grind. First kiss. First time. Hook a brother up. What was the soundtrack like?

I'm not talking 'bout that stuff that first comes to mind. Though they are all geniuses in their own right, let's leave out the Prince, Michael Jackson, Luther Van Dross, and Whitney Houston. I want some R & B with a lil' bit of funk on the side. Somethin' that smell like old chittlins but still make you say "Awwwww....

That

Was

My

JAM!

I'll get you started. First off is some Rene and Angela. Ya'll remember "My First Love" and "You Don't Have to Cry" right? It's in there. Next is some Shalamar "This is For the Lover in You." Uhh Huh. I even threw in some Jermaine Jackson "Do What You Do" and some Alexander O'Neal "If You Were Here Tonight." In fact I've been checking out the videos and some of the old audio jams on You Tube. What ya'll gone add to my R & B funk Slow Jam CD?

Hook yo' boy up,

Emanuel

I would throw in some SOS band "No One's Gonna Love You"
"I Love Your Smile" Shanice.
Champaign "How Bout Us?"
"Tell Me What You Want Me To Do", Tevin Campbell
"Weak" SUV

These are some of my favorite oldies. I'm not sure all of them are eighties though. LOL!

Thank A_woman. How about some Freddie Jackson "You Are My Lady"? Who remembers "Sweet November" by Babyface's old group The Deele. What ya'll know about some Confunkshun?

Some of that is early '90s though. It's cool because I would definitely include some Boyz II Men (especially "On Bended Knee".

That

Was

My

JAM!).

Damn my buzz wearin' off and the liquor store is closed.

Dang! I just listened to "Everything I Miss At Home."

For those of you who join in I'm looking for R &
B '80s and early '90s classics when singers SANG and sang about love and lost love. Not just getting some.

That Shanice jam is a little to upbeat. I'm looking for stuff you slow grinded to at the club when you knew it was the last two songs the DJ was gonna play and you was tryin' to make that love connection.

Side note: Some of these song titles would make some good book titles too.

Here's some more good songs:

Switch: "I Call Your Name"
The Emotions: "Don't Ask My Neighbors"
Phyllis Hyman: "Living All Alone."
Debarge: "All This Love"
Troop: "All I Do is Think of You."

Good stuff Ferociouskitty and Cynique. Some of those might be '70s and a few of them are a little too uptempo even though they are baby-making music.

Oh snap. Tender Love

Shoot, Emanuel, "Tender Love" is so bad, I dealt with a guy about 6 months longer than I should have because he serenaded me with that song under a spotlight in front of his fireplace once, falsetto and everythang.

And that was 2005/2006!

Behold the timeless power of "Tender Love", LOL!

There was something distinctive about 80s music, wasn't there? A lot of it resonated with the Minnesota sound via Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, which meant there were the requisite drum machines and synthesizers. And, of course, all the videos of hit songs were the bomb.

Wasn't the video for "Tender Love" one where the group singing it were lounging on the front stoop of a NY tenement building? There was a story going around that the lead singer, who was snaggled toothed, was an ex-con - or was on parole, or something. Later I remember reading that he died.

You recall the video correctly, Cynique.

In fact, several of the members of the original Force MDs passed away at early ages. Their wiki entrance reads like the Temptations, with all the replacement members and what not.

The 80s for me is: Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, New Edition, Karen White, The Time, and of course all the Roxanne songs...

Emanuel, you are in the wrong decade if you specifically want funky slow jams. You will definitely have to go back to the 70s for that. Some of my favorites:

>Norman Connors-You Are My Starship

>Average White Band-A Love of Your Own

>Any Isley Brothers slow jam

>Any Rufus slow jam

>Faze-O-Riding High

>Rose Royce-I'm Going Down; Wishing on a Star; I Wanna Get Next to You

>Bootsy Collins-I'd Rather Be with You

>L.T.D.-Love Ballad

If you must have 80's then you can go with:

>Patrice Rushen-You Remind Me & Forget Me Nots (tho perhaps a little too uptempo for your playlist)

>Art of Noise-Moments in Love

>Gap Band-Yearnin for Your Love

>Con Funk Shun-Love's Train

>Guy-Piece of My Love

>Cameo might also have some slow funky slow jams, and they straddle the 70s and 80s. (I particularly like Sparkle. Not particularly "funky" but I have similar memories as FK tied to that song ;-))

Quit it now. Yawl gonna have to stop taking me back. I was going to stay out of this because I didn't want to go back there but when Sade hit the board I couldn't hold still. Unlike Yvettep, I lubble bubble luv-ed me some Sade. Lawd have mercy, I used to play her for days.

And when Kitty hit us with The Time, I started doing that dance that Morris Day used to do. See, although Emanuel said no Prince, kitty was slick and slipped in a the Time.

Hey yawl, what about the song "Slow Jam". Come on now, don't tell me that didn't bring back memories of greasy hair on a hot face.

Who said New Birth? Now they know a little something. Oh yeah, I should have known it. It was that one nasty girl.

But see, Yvettep closed it for me when she hit us with Norman Conner's, You Are My Starship:

"You are my starship, come take me out tonight, and don't be late" ...."and don't you? Dang Yvettep, you done started something. Whats the rest of the words

Ok. I probably would include some '70s stuff on my CD. How about Teddy Pendergrass's "Come on Over"?

But see, yawl are missing something. Emanuel (who's probably baby sitting a swollen head and dry mouth) said, he wanted songs that inspired the grind. Shoot, some songs made you dance and some songs made you smile but we all know what a grind song is. That's when the two step turns into 4 hips and no steps; head tilted back and eyes closed. Those were the kinds of songs that let you know if your baby really loved you. Well, they at least let you know if they had something for you :-).

Do I need to bring in Chris Hayden to explain that *LOL*.

I'm so jealous of
you guys.

The first American song I heard or danced
to was the night I first arrived here,
DEC. 1979, "Rapper's Delight" by Sugar
Hill Gang.

After that--I tortured my AA family
by becoming addicted to The GoGo's and
Olivia Newton-John.

Then, because of my doctor, I got heavily
into SILENT MOVIES (1914-1929).

It wasn't until I learned English that
finally got to enjoy and appreciate all
the singers you have posted.

MY HEART...was Young M.C.

My other favorites were

MC Lyte
Madonna
Anita Baker,
Phyllis Hyman,
SWV
En Vogue
Whitney Houston,
JODY WATLEY
Streisand
Eric B. & Rakim
K.R.S. ONE (my ultimate hero)
Donna Summer
Grace Jones
Chaka Khan
Janet Jackson

I still preferred OLDIES music...

Bessie Smith
Al Green
Dionne Warwick (60's stuff)
Jimi Hendrix
Barry White
Diana Ross & Supremes
Martha Reeves & Vandellas
Aretha Franklin
Nina Simone
Janis Joplin
Chicago
Eagles
Marvin Gaye
Stevie Wonder

Emanuel....
How about L.L. COOL J's
slow jam
"I NEED LOVE"?

That was my song.

Another favorite of mine
was "Creep'n" by Luther Vandross

For SEX, I really prefer Jazz music. But I used to get fuckked on...

"ANYTIME ANYPLACE" by Janet Jackson

"SUGAR WALLS" by Sheena Easton

"PULL UP TO THE BUMPER" by Grace Jones

"Do Me Baby" (The remake by a female)

I have very "off the wall" musical
tastes, because one of my favorite
christmas songs is Dolly Parton
"Hard Candy Christmas" and my kid's
daddy used to tease me about it
(and do it to me to that song).

But, if the Whispers ain't on the CD remix, it ain't an 80's slow jam re-mix. Yawl don't no nothing about that.

The song, "Are You Going My Way" was sure to make a few sparks. That's the lick there!

Sorry I missed your posts. I took my sons sledding and then went to check out the Notorious flick. Back to the discussion...

Definitely The Whispers. My jam was "If You Just Say Yes (I'll Do The Rest)."

Now ya'll bringing back my old rollerskating days. We used to backwards skate and couples skate to the slow jams.

Atomic Dog. LOL! My 80-year old dad still does the Atomic Dog at the family reunions after he's had a lil' taste. We just gotta remind him who is family before he gets too much into it.

Ain't nothing wrong with Luther, Prince, and nem. I was just listening to "You Give Good Love" by Whitney last night. Just looking for some jams with some funk, some soul, and some grindability.

BTW, I purposely posted on the AA site for the tie in with book titles and because we all know what's the most popular link up in here.

Kola. Aww no you didn't bring up the LL Cool J jam. And Al Green and Marvin Gaye were my dudes. (I liked Let's Get It On wayyyyy better than Sexual Healing. And I used to rock both Al Green and Marvin Gaye at my siblings high school talent shows when I was between 3 and 5. Almost made it on TV too.)

What ya'll know about some "Gigolos Get Lonely Too"?

I still ain't heard from a few regulars. Where's Miss Purple Panties and Mr. (www.dtpollard.com)? What ya'll know 'bout some '80s jams?

LOL, no, you didn't!!

You talking about your dad doing the Atomic Dog got me to thinking about folks down South doing the Georgia Slop, The Camel/Camel Walk, and The Security, back in the day. I was but a wee impressionable lass...

See, again I was going to stay out of this until Kitty mentioned the Camel Walk *lol*. I don't know how this would work but I have a video clip of me doing that dance. No, kitty, I don't have on my gators.

Wait a minute, theres a knock at my door ........oh it's just (www.dtpollard.com)

See, yawl need to stop :-).

Isn't it something how song take us back.
It took A_womon back to her slowgrind partner, Big Leon.

Emanuel hit it on the head when he said that when the night wore down everybody would be looking for that special someone ...been there, done that.

I thought I knew every dance step that there was but The Security??? I wonder what that looked like?

Did I miss something? Who is Miss Purple Panties. Do they know who they are ...HAHAHAHA. and would they raise their hand?

I tell you what, am listening to the Whispers right now. Yes sir, "Cloud Number Nine" ....it just keeps getting better with time, you got me walking on cloud number nine

Carey, re: The Security, all I can say is that men did not do this dance, and it looked like the woman was thrusting her goodies a little bit at a time in all directions, starting from left to right.

And I don't want to see the video of you doing the Camel Walk unless you are in your now'n'later gators!

Whew weeeee, I've been standing on saying I am an open book and have no lasting regrets about my past. So I am so glad you didn't want to see that Camel Walk. Old pictures are one thang but seeing me bent over with a hump in my back, with arms behind me, while walking on my toes, would have been too much for me to live down.

You are right, I don't think I would have been doing The Security. Nevertheless, it sounds like a dance I wouldn't have minded seeing.

THE CAMEL WALK!!!! Sheeze. I thought it went out with my generation! I used to do it in grade school along with the jitter bug, which meant that it preceded the BOP which I did in highschool. Of course it can be argued that Michael Jackson brought this dance back and took it to another level when he did it backwards and called it the Moon Walk.

Come to think of it, we did use to brag that the dances we did around in Chicago took a while for the rest of the country to catch up with.

Bingo! The South got everything last, lol. I most fondly remember my next door neighbor doing the Camel Walk. She had these loooong skinny legs, and that just made it even more over the top. She was a little younger than my grandmother who was born in 1922.

The Slop. I still haven't seen that one yet. Heard about it for the first time when I saw the movie "love jones." Back in my day, when did The Cabbage Patch, The Wop, The Moonwalk (before Michael Jackson) and little dance we only did in Detroit (lived there 10 years) called The Schoolcraft.

Cynique,

The wifey knows of my affection for the old school jams and is cool with it. At the time of this original post, she heard me jamming in the other room to Debarge's Time Will Reveal, which is her jam too. If it wasn't 4 in the morning, she would have said:

That

Is

My

Jaaaayuuum!

Instead she said,

Turn

That

Crap

Off!

It's 4 in the morning.

Okay. My boy in Detroit just sent me the ultimate list that included this jam called "Please Be Gentle (Calling Your Name) by Frederick. Listen here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0npSOpR9u1I

Talk about memories. I was a junior in high school when that one came out.

He also reminded me of "Sunshine" by Alexander O'Neal, "Girl" by The Time, and "Love is a House" by Force MDs. (Though you can't really slow grind to that last one.)

What ya'll know about some Stacy Latisaw/Johnny Gill duets?

Emanuel wrote: "only did in Detroit (lived there 10 years) called The Schoolcraft".

Cynique probably knows a little something about this. See, Emanuel's post reminded me of what you had to know before you even thought about dancing in Chicago. There are some things that never change. Chicago, along with Minneapolis and Champage Ill, are steppers cities. Oh yeah, there's no greater joy than to watch a couple go through their moves. There's a basic step but real steppers break it down. The man generally leads, spinning and turning his partner. Sometimes they pause and the women turns the man out of a hold. Oh buddy, it's a thang of beauty.

Cynique, they don't know nothing about that. When you mentioned the Bop, I knew you'd been turned a few times.

Let me clear up the Camel Walk thang. I know yawl will feel me on this. Doesn't the brain remember a dance when you hear a certain song. Well, music has always been an intregal part of my family. My mother and father used to go dancing and we'd get to stay up with a baby sitter, Uncle Wallace. Now, back then there wasn't 24 hours of television so we'd play music and dance.

Anyway, my wife, children and I would have dance night. We would dance together and sometimes each would take turns doing their best dance. So, if James Brown happen to hit the box, a hump would jump in my back, and the Camel Walk was on. Hey, The Smuf is still in these legs, too. I don't know if it can get out but it's in there *lol*.

So again, no Gators Kitty, house slippers.

Yeah, Carey, step-dancing and all of its intricate foot work has evolved into a regular culture around Chicago. Steppers congregate at certain clubs, dress in a certain style, hold contests and even have conventions.

Boppin was the predecessor of Steppin which I never moved up to once I got older.

When I hear Robin Thicke doing his blue-eyed soul thing nowadays, I think his parents must've been been slo jamming between the sheets to the beat of a black artist when they conceived him.

Yeah, Cynique, am feelin' you. Steppin' and boppin' are kissin' cousins. I too wouldn't call myself a stepper but every once in a while I'll hit a couple of steps. You are right, there are Stepper clubs, and it is a cultural thang. I know people that travel to Chicago just to get their step on.

Disciple: I am with you on the military thang. I remember getting off a plane in Thailand and listening to Frankie Beverly and Maze. That song always takes me back there.

Disciple ....YOU?! "pimp juice days" ....naw, you're killing me *lol*.

Kitty: I am beginning to wonder about you. You ol' Lady Of Magic. I don't know what you like to write but there's a romantic love story inside of you. Well, they say to write about something you know and it seems that you know a little sumtin ....if not only lost love or love in waiting. Lubble-Double, even boiled in trouble, theres a story in you :-).

Maybe you can get together with Kola and Purple Panties (who is that?) and come up with a Gooooodie ...*lol*.

I got it. A dreadlock wearing, Yale graduate and her African friend: Their romantic adventures of lust and love; The good, the bad, and the delicious.

But yeah, I'm going to tell a love story one of these days, too. At the moment, however, non-fiction is where it's at for me. One story at a time, lol.

I gotcha babe, I'll be waiting. I KNOW you have skills.

In the mean time:

Kiss me and kiss me again, come take from this bounty, of this human shell, my heart lives in, and love me, ouuuweee. And to make life complete, promise me baby, that we'll practice makin' babies, while the world is sound asleep.

Ooooh I love you girl, don't tease me, let me in your future, unlock me in your history. and the fork in the road, which way you will go? I'd like to know, are you going my way? Where dreams come true every day. Where true love is only a touch away.

Are you really really really going my way baby. And if you really need me, why don't you tell me baby.

Emanuel,

Your sister missed you King. :-)

And YES...I definitely said
"I Need Love" by L.L. Cool J

because that was MY "hold me
and rub my booty from behind
"
song for like a whole year.

LOL!

You don't even have to dance to
that one. You just put your
head on daddy's shoulder and
"rock" against one another
as he rubs your booty down.

Also....

I don't know how any couple could
not feel the urge to MAKE LOVE
while slow dancing to the D'Angelo
and Lauryn Hill duet "Nothing
Even Matters
."

THAT CUT...will make you want to
get Baptized; have sex; get
married; make love and DIE
TOGETHER all before the final
notes are over.

It is just so soulfully, sexily
spiritually beautiful.

WARNING, something "risque"
about to be uttered.

One of the hottest "encounters" I ever
had in my life was not to a SLOW GRIND
---but while dancing in 6 inch heels
(and my Valentine's Day Zebra panties) to
LUKE and 2 Live Crew.

Shit. I was walking Bow-legged for a
week!

Okay,

Anyone remeber shalamar!

BTW, Daniels was the original pop along kid who define the moonwalk on Soul train. Micheal gave pizzaz and broad appeal but he was years ahead of Micheal, and the early fifties version was weak by comparison.

I don't know whether this is exactly a slo jam from back in the 80s but the sensual - "My Secret Garden" featuring Al B. Sure, Al DeBarge, James Ingram and Barry White is really romance inducing.

Jody Watley (who I LOVED) came
from Shalamar.

I love all the "hit singles" by
Shalamar.

And the lead singing guy
has a very HOT duet with
Dionne Warwick that I liked.
