As you know, since its inception in 2001 First Lady Laura Bush has hosted the National Book Festival. This Annual Festival organized by the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. takes place every fall on the National Mall. In 2007 over 120,000 people were in attendance. The Library of Congress will of course keep the tradition of the event being hosted by the First Lady, which of course means that none other than Lady-O will host the 2009 event.

What does this mean for the Book Festival? We will just have to wait and see but I do commend the Event Planners for recognizing or at least forecasting for increased African American interest in the Festival. To this end I have been asked to become the Special Advisor for Diversity Programming for the upcoming years in the planning of the National Book Festival.

This is a great step in a positive direction. Don’t get me wrong, I have participated in the National Book Festival each year it has come to D.C. It is a fabulous, prestigious well-executed event. Not to mention very well funded. There is a formal dinner at the Library of Congress the night before the actual event and the morning of the festival the First Lady hosts a breakfast at the White House for all of the Authors. The one issue that is not a secret here in the D.C. metro area is that while in the midst of “Chocolate City” it is not very diverse in the attendance nor author representation. There are “sprinkles” but not enough. I commend the LOC for being proactive in this area and look forward to serving in a much-needed capacity in giving the festival a more inclusive feel.

On this note, are there any suggestions that you would like presented to Ms. Obama? How would you like to see African American and Latino Authors represented at the Nations Premiere Author Event?

Well since Obama's Half-African...perhaps
you could have a few African authors.

As well as African American and Latino.

My Bad Ms. Kola,

I should have said Authors from Across the Diaspora, although I will have to find out if "National" means American or American Published only.

I'll have to get back to you on that.

Mocha, I watched some of your videos on YouTube and you're the best, sister. :-)

I knew you wouldn't confuse my tone.

But don't forget that there's PLENTY of
"Nationally published" "African" authors
who are U.S. citizens.

But only ONE raised by African-Americans
that I know of...lil 'ol me.

And GOD do my African brethren give me
heat for that.

Then the AA sisters can't stand me---though
it was THEM (their kind) who raised me to
have plenty of Mouth and Opinions.

As I said---you're the best.

P.S.

I could put you in direct touch with
Chinua Achebe, Chris Abani, Francis Bok
or Meri Nana-Ama Danquah.

Because of "OSAMA Bin Laden"...I can assure
you that I won't be invited.

If you want to confirm that...I could put you
in direct contact with Condoleezza Rice as well.

LOL!

Stay gorgeous my sis.

Hey Kola, thanks for the compliment.

Thanks Ill let you know if I need your help, Ill keep you posted.

I am working with Chinua on a separate project. When you get a chance check it out www.readingacrosscontinents.com

Basically it is a literature based student exchange program.

I think you'll find it interesting. On the website it still says that Chimamanda Adichie is representing Nigeria but we now have Dr. Achebe himself representing Nigeria. Let me know what you think.
