The 42-year-old actress graces the cover of the March 2009 issue of Essence and opens up about the different relationships in her life. Asked about dating Gabriel, Halle said, “I tried Black men. I tried. I married two Black men. You know I tried. I don’t hold all Black males responsible because of the two bad eggs I got. I even dated Black men after my last divorce, but this is just where I found love.”

Halle makes an 'interesting' comparison of her troubles being MARRIED to two Black men versus how she's "found love" shacking with and being the babymomma of some White dude.
But, regardless, she being with Ofay ain't no loss to the brothahood. |

Halle is Biracial; however, because she self-identifies as a Black woman, I think she is still somewhat conflicted, though she'll never admit it, that she couldn't make it work with a Black man. And even though Gabriel is beautiful, and so is their baby, I still think she internalizes the pain from what she feels is a failed attempt (with Black men).
*disclaimer* I think dating a handful of Black men, and happening to have marriage experience with only two, as in Halle's case, is not a reflection of black men, as a whole, not being dating or marriage material. I just happen to think she generally chooses the wrong type of man. I think prior to getting a little bit of a backbone, men constantly played on her insecurities. She seemed to (somewhat) get it together, after Eric Benet cheated on her.
I think Eric's cheating made her, a very well known (insecure) "sex symbol", realize that, relationships are more than being eye candy. And being a "sex symbol", or even "beautiful", didn't keep her husband's d*ck in her bedroom, or make a man treat her with respect. She learned the hard way that "looks aren't everything", which goes against every bit of the process of female socialization, which proved brutal for Halle, moreso than I think the average woman. Halle changed how she felt about herself and met Gabriel at the critical point. And Gabriel just happens to be a different type of man than the men she typically dates/and the two she married (because her mindset was different), and it has nothing to do with him being White, though she wrongly (I believe) thinks it does (because she isn't yet completely healed from past hurts). |

I haven't read the article. And I am a firm believer that folks should love who they want (so long as their partners are also consenting adults). I hope that this statement, however, was taken out of context--and the the context is made clear in the article.
It just seems like an odd thing to say. My hunch would be that the interviewer asked her outright about race. Or, that she felt that because it was Essence, that she had to justify her choice. In either case (if true), it seems like most 42 year olds would have more wisdom than she displayed. Certainly that is none of anyone's concern, and certainly she could have said that in a polite way.
And anyway, why race? Why not "I tried marriage" or "I tried relationships with men my age or older"? It just seems odd. I do hope that age and maturity has made her more wise about relationships, or she really will repeat any mistakes from her past. |

Oddly enough, like Halle, my sister tried brothers twice in marraige. A disaster each time. They just dogged her terribly. Eventually, justice prevailed, their po' dumb assess are broke and out on the street (at no fault of hers), and she finally jumped to our other side of the fence...and is now happy as a clam. All said. |

Hold up, now I don't understand why Halle can't get a pass, but Tina Turner can? What's up with that? Tina Turner basically said the same thing in her book, I, Tina. But, when it comes to Tina, there's always, I don't blame her after all the sh_t Ike sent her through. Whereas, Halle is getting static. Please explain. |

My eyes are still blinking after reading Nels post. Am going to reserve any comments on that one. Maybe he'll come back and splain that one.
I am thinking Halle might have been misquoted. Besides, them brothas she was pokin' around with ain't your pillars of the right way. I know plenty of brothas that have "tried" white women and ..... Well ....you know what am saying. But, then again, some brothas tried sistas too and they now have cream in their coffee. I think they liked decaffinated coffee from the jump.
We can't use Tina as an example of how to do anythang. Well, I shouldn't say that but the women went from talking like she was from the south side of Memphis to talkin' with a British accent. |

What Yvettep said..though Tina suffered far more than Halle but that is no excuse to dog ALL brothers and use that as an EXCUSE to marry "others". Just do it because you fell in love.

As a long-time Halle-watcher, it is my personal opinion gleaned from comments by her ex-husbands and lovers and she, herself, that Halle has man issues, period.
Both of her former spouses said she was a sex kitten until she got married whereupon she became withdrawn and suspicious of their amorousness. She herself claims that the abusiveness her father demonstrated toward her mother and her older sister affected her view of men, and she later confessed that she never really felt sexy or desireable until she became pregnant.
I also remember reading that another guy she dated said that when he was hesitant about becoming involved with her, she called him up and left an unbelievably venomous tirade on his answering machine.
Her Canadian baby daddy seems to be a sperm-providing wuss who she can control, and I got this impression from her making the comment that all through her pregnancy she was constantly grooming him on how to prepare for fatherhood. Recently, she announced very matter of factly that their next project is to make another baby.
She lied about that hit-and-run accident she was involved in and she cracked up when a coyote killed her pet poodle. 
In other words, it seems to me that Halle is a control freak and a tad unstable. This doesn't make her unusual but it does make her less of a victim. |

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! I've been shaking my head at some of these responses. Why would anyone care what Halle Berry says or does? And I say that not to besmirch the woman because I believe she is entitled to date whomever she wants and for what ever reason. If she is done with the brothers...why should I (or you) care? It's her life. She has the right to pursue whatever she wants. I guess since I'm not into peoples personal lives, their choices in lovers is of no interest nor concern to me. Maybe white guys work best for her. As long as she is happy she could date white Poodles for all I care. Once again -it's her life. Get over it! Just my two cents...... |
