She was a really popular singer in the 1920s, & is considered the first black female superstar. Yet there aren't any recordings or filmings of her work which is why she is so largely forgotten. I don't understand why. There are plenty of other artists around that time whose craft have been filmed and recorded that you can see today

Florence Mills was at her peak during the Harlem Renaissance and she got all of her accolades when she was alive. She died young and suddenly, probably from TB and her funeral, held in Harlem, rivaled that of matinee idol Rudolph Valentino.
Many pictures of her exist and she was cute and petite and brown-skinned. It remains a mystery why her unusual voice and unique talent were never captured on film and preserved for posterity.

Such a shame that someone so famous became so forgotten. I would have liked to see her work

Well let's see--

You think it might have to do with the fact that the first sound films were created in the 30's?

How about Blind Lemon Jefferson?

Sound recordings have been around since Edison invented the grammyphone in 1877. Silent films first appeared in the 1900s.

Enrico Caruso, the great Italian tenor, died in 1921 but he left behind a body of work preserved on records as well as silent films of himself. Mills, who died in 1927, was world famous but left behind no such legacy.

Maybe she stank. You ever heard any of her records?

Didn't we just report that Florence Mills made no recordings or movies. Didn't we also just say that she was in the vanguard of black female super stars? She was toasted in Europe and, as a headliner during the Harlem Renaissance, was the darling of the New York theater world.

AND TO EVERYONE'S BEWILDERMENT, THERE IS NO VISUAL OR AUDIO RECORD OF HER CAREER; only still photos and written reviews.
