"Every municipality and every citizen of South Carolina, should be, well, forced to respect these two days [MLK day and a Confederate holiday] and learn what they can about those two particular parts of our history," Ford said Tuesday.

In a state steeped in a segregationist past, "there's no love in this state between black and white basically," he said. That's not apparent at the Statehouse, where black and white legislators get along, "but if you go out there in real South Carolina, it's hatred and I think we can bring our people together."

Lonnie Randolph, president of the state conference of NAACP branches, objected to that reasoning.

"Here Senator Ford is talking about the importance of race relations by forcing recognition of people who did everything they could to destroy another race — particularly those that look like I do," Randolph said. "You can't make dishonor honorable. It's impossible."

Wow! Talk about your alternate reality. Why do a some black people who ascend the heights of their political aspirations seem to bend over backward to accommodate white folks? Why would a black man entertain the thought of honoring such a PURELY racist, lyinching, night riding, child murdering, racial suppressionist group? I thought a holiday was supposed to be a celibration. What would the country be celibrating in honoring the confederates? SLAVERY? LYNCHINGS? MURDER? somebody please tell me.

This is the same region of the country where some schools are still named after Confederate leaders. :-(

If you two don't break it up. You know we have laws on the book about riots.

Look, let gets real. So, should we not learn about or visit the history of Africa or Spain? Should we not look at the Union side of racism? When many people hear the word Confederate they think of the Civil War. Lets get something straight right there. The Civil War was not solely about freeing dem po' slaves. Crystal started a tread on history books. Soul_Sister works in a library and she's always touted the rewards of reading them.

The Confederate leaders were no different than any other leaders of armies. They were doing their jobs as defined by their positions in that army.

Is the conquered army inherently the bad guys. Before your knees jerk, think of Rome. Before your next sentence is preceded by "yeah but" think of the Zulu.

I only have to look outside my window and think about all the Indians that used to live here to mount a defense against those that desire to leave history behind and champion the ways of the conqueror and those that led their armies.

There are military leaders of other wars for whom there is no holiday, so it's not as if they all have holidays except the Confederates.

A holiday is not necessary for people to learn Civil War history.

There is no Union holiday, so I don't understand your point. And despite the Union's racism, and Lincoln's shortcomings, blacks still celebrate the Emancipation...for obvious reasons. What do we have to celebrate about the Confederacy?

Further, taking the reverse of what you said, the Civil War was not solely about those leaders; it was also about slavery. Taken as a whole, I don't think these leaders merit celebration regardless of whether or not they were just doing their job. Should Germans have an SS holiday?

Hello All,

Hold up, wait a minute...when I said earlier that we ought to kick the southern states out of the union, what response did I get? Now, I told you they were some backwards thinking white folks down there! The article also stated that Alabama and Mississippi have been celebrating Confederate Memorial Day. But, this idiot Ford...what kind of sh_t is this!? This kind of silliness needs to be outlawed. First Michael Steele, now this fool, what kind of race have we become?

That didn't take long, I only had to look at your first sentence:

"There are military leaders of other wars for whom there is no holiday, so it's not as if they all have holidays except the Confederates"

So you are saying that there ARE holidays for some like the confederates. That's what you said and I think you may know of some.

Should Germans have an SS holiday?

Well said FK. This illustrates my point quite well. Black people are always so accommodating when it comes to revisiting the atrocities of our past. THEY WERE HORRENDOUS! and no less traumatizing than the Jewish holocaust. How can we expect other cultures to respect our past and the ugly scars left behind when we ourselves have that
"Awl shucks yawl, that was a long time ago let's let bygones be bygones. So what if gangs of you confederate flag wielding white folks dragged black fathers out of their homes and strung them from trees in their own yards while terrified wives and children watched the unthinkable and most likely were the ones who had to go out and cut down their husband's and father's dead carcas. It's ok. Let's just create a holiday for you good ole boys. After all yawl let us give Martin one." mentality.

SICKENING!!!!!!!!

The point is taking up arms against the country in an attempt to secede so you can continue a brutal and inhuman economic system should be honored.

We should all well learn the lesson.

Some people will never let it rest.

What the heck, a paid holiday is a paid holiday. Pacify these rabid rebels by commemorating the date General Robert E. Lee surrendered. Lee headed up the Confedrate Army whose men fought bravely for what they believed in. He was a West Point graduate, an acknowledged military genius, and an honorable man who was formerly a commissioned officer of the Union Army. He was reluctant to switch his loyalities to the Confederacy but did so because he didn't want to lead troops against his fellow southerners.

On this day black citizens of South Carolina could hold cook outs and burn rebel flags.

Caaaan't we all just get along?

No.

You wrote: The Confederate leaders were no different than any other leaders of armies.

I responded and you quoted: There are military leaders of other wars for whom there is no holiday, so it's not as if they all have holidays except the Confederates

...meaning: It isn't as if every set of military leaders from every war EXCEPT the Confederates has its own specific, official holiday, and the Confederates have somehow been singled out and excluded.

Man who beat civil rights leader asks forgiveness
Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 1:15am EST

AP Photo/Master Sgt. Cecilio Ricardo

WASHINGTON

Elwin Wilson was an unabashed racist, the sort who once hung a black doll from a noose outside his home. John Lewis was a young civil rights leader bent on changing laws, if not hearts and minds, even if it cost him his life.

They faced each other at a South Carolina bus station during a protest in 1961. Wilson joined a white gang that jeered Lewis, attacked him and left him bloodied on the ground.

Forty-eight years later, the men met again _ this time so Wilson could apologize to Lewis and express regret for his hatred. Lewis, now a congressman from Atlanta, greeted his former tormentor at his Capitol Hill office.

"I just told him that I was sorry," Wilson, 72, said in a telephone interview Wednesday as he traveled home to Rock Hill, S.C. For years, he said, he tried to block the incident out of his mind "and couldn't do it."

Lewis said Wilson is the first person involved in the dozens of attacks against him during the civil rights era to step forward and apologize. When they met Tuesday, Lewis offered forgiveness without hesitation.

"I was very moved," said Lewis. "He was very, very sincere, and I think it takes a lot of raw courage to be willing to come forward the way he did. ... I think it will lead to a great deal of healing."

Wilson said he had felt an urge to voice his remorse for years. He talked about his past activities a few weeks ago with a friend, and the friend asked him where he thought he might go if he died.

"I said probably hell," Wilson said. "He said, 'Well, you don't have to.'"

Wilson's apology was first reported by The (Rock Hill, S.C.) Herald. After reading an article about local black civil rights leaders reacting to President Barack Obama's inauguration, he and another former segregationist called the paper saying they wanted to apologize.

The paper aired their comments and documented an emotional meeting with the local activists at a former whites-only lunch counter in downtown Rock Hill, where Wilson had antagonized demonstrators during a 1961 sit-in.

After meeting with the local activists, Wilson realized that Lewis must have been the young black man he had attacked at the bus station that same year, when a bus carrying two Freedom Riders rolled into town. The riders were Lewis, who is black, and the late Albert Bigelow, who was white. Neither pressed charges over the assault.

Wilson didn't know that Lewis, who was 21 at the time, had since become one of the most influential Democrats in Congress.

"I never dreamed that a man that I had assaulted, that he would ever be a congressman and that I'd ever see him again," Wilson said. "He and everybody up there in his office ... they were just good people, treated you right and all."

Lewis and Wilson said they hoped Wilson's quest for redemption will inspire others who took part in civil rights-era violence to come forward and help heal wounds from the struggle over integration.

"I said if just one person comes forward and gets the hate out of their heart, it's all worth it," Wilson said. "But I hope there will be a bunch of people. Life's short and we all go to the same place when we die."

Hello All,

Carey: I wasn't making a comparison between Ford and the Confederate Memorial Day. Maybe Ford was trying to bring some attention to this "holiday", because I did not know that it existed and by making the claim that it should be a paid holiday brought unwanted attention. Now, if he genuinely made the claim for it being a paid holiday because he's stupid instead of fighting it, then he's a damn idiot and I put him in the same boat with Michael Steele, the go along to get along Negro.

A_womon, just re-read your post in light of recent news from the Vatican:

3993013%2C00.html,http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,3993013,00.html

excerpt:
Pope Benedict XVI's pardon of Williamson, along with three other ultra-conservative bishops, has threatened the Vatican's relationship with Jewish leaders and led to an outburst of criticism within the Catholic Church.

Two weeks ago, in an interview with Swedish state television, Williamson said "historical evidence is hugely against 6 million Jews having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler."

The timing of Benedict's pardon is considered particularly insensitive, as the announcement came just days before Holocaust Memorial Day on Jan. 27.

Since then, the Vatican has asked this guy to recant his views.

As the world turns...

Thanks FK and so it goes. Many trying to deny the atrocities of the past visited on groups of people based on race, religion, or other extraneous issues which should never result in the wanton slaughter of innocent people!

Carey: And your article means what? An apology should obliterate the murderous past of people like him, right? Please. Again. Think of FK's example. No one would except the hand of friendship from a know SS officer who participated in the holocaust. No, that sucker would be arrested and tried for crimes against humanity the man in your post should have been as well.

To err is human. To forgive is divine. There is redemption in letting go of hate and liberating one's spirit from the negativity of vindictivness. In fact, there is a movement among the holocaust survivors encouraging them to forgive, but not forget.

Bill Clinton, in his capacity as president issued an apology to the descendants of black slaves. But Blacks don't seem inclined to accept it. And so it goes.

I was aware of the apology, but not any reaction to it. I guess the apparent lack of discussion by black folks speaks volumes.

The apologies (others have come after Clinton), while symbolic--and not a cure-all for, say, racism--are indeed meaningful, to me. Much like Obama's presidency.

"Bill Clinton, in his capacity as president issued an apology to the descendants of black slaves. But Blacks don't seem inclined to accept it. And so it goes."

This is true. And as you know, many Negroes have selective memory. Clinton was the one who initiated a "conversation on race" and created a commission chaired by Professor John Hope Franklin in 1997 (Dr. Franklin talked about it in his autobiography). No other American president dared or cared to make such an effort. Nothing really came out of it but it was symbolic in nature. And to be honest, I have really never seen the purpose or a meaningful and measurable after effect of such things. But the man did try. Negroes (just like white conservatives) just scoffed and looked the other way. Go figure.....
