Congrats to Tarji P. Henson on her nomination for Benjamin Button. I thought Tarji should have won for her role in BABY BOY. Maybe the Academy will make it right.

Yes, congratulations are in order for Ms. Henson. She's very talented at playing those melancholy roles. Cheers!

Hello All,

It bears mentioning that Viola Davis was also nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her role as the suspected sexual abuse victim's African-American mother. If you have looked at NBC's Law & Order or any of its spin off series, there is a good chance that you've seen Viola Davis in action. She usually plays the smart, hard-as-nails defense attorney who drives the assistant DAs up the wall. I am so glad she got an Oscar nomination! Now maybe she can get more air time on Law & Order.

I've had my eye on Viola Davis for years, from the first time I saw her portray a dirty cop on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The next day, I recall asking every fellow "CI junkie" I knew who she was because I'd never seen her perform in anything prior to that. A couple years later, she popped up on the classic Law & Order series as a defense attorney; a role she's reprised on several L&O episodes. Her part is always small but meaty, and she always steals the scene.

Like Taraji, Viola has been relegated to the little-known, underrated actress realm. I loved Taraji in Baby Boy, Snake Eyes, and Talk to Me. (Haven't seen Benjamin Button yet). I can't choose which of these two powerhouse actresses I'd like to see take home this Oscar more. I hope the mere nomination will remove them from the "best kept secret" files and catapult them to the A-list/household name status that their talents have rightfully earned them. Either of these ladies can definitely carry a film, rather than be allocated to a supporting role.

Pop culture is just one of the things I keep up with, Chrishayden, and I do so by reading newspapers, surfing the net, and watching TV.

As for the Oscars, I haven't seen any of the movies nominated. I wait for films to come on Cable TV. I'm pulling for Brad Pitt to win as best actor cuz I think he's fione.

Yawl forced me to put on some Biggie and Tupac. I had to bring my spirit back home. Hanging around yawl can be bad for a black mans soul.

Tupac said, "I wipe the tears from my lonely eyes, said I'll return but I gotta fight the prince of pride. Don't shead a tear for me cause momma I ain't happy here. The homies wanna to kick it but am just be laughin at cha, cause you's a down ass b*tch and "I ain't mad at cha"

Shame on you Yvettep. Why are you encouraging Cynique to watch the pale ghosts. You should be pullin' her coat on some color purple type shit. That "single white girl" mess is rank. Hand her some Shaft or Truck Turner. Heck, "What's Love Got To Do With It" would even work. Move away from the light-white.

What are yawl looking for?

Tupac: "How do you want it, how do you feel? come up as a nigga in a cash game living in the fast lane, am for real. Love the way you regulate your hips, push yo' ass out, gotta nigga wanting it so bad, bout to pass out. Wanna dig you, and I can't lie about it. Baby am a rider, then am just a simple man. Hello

Chris, your concern about Cynique's absence from this thread made think of Thump. You know he used to be the man at picking the Oscars. Oh yeah, I have to give it to him, he was bold with his picks and he seldom missed. I guess his neighborhood theater doesn't have handicap ramps. He's getting a little old and I think it's hard for him to get around. I wish I knew his address. I'd sent him a couple of my bootlegged copies.

**wiping tears** Po' thang

Am riding with Benjimen Button. I have not seen Slumdog. I wish a real sister *wink* would hit the board with a real review. I just can't get with a picture named slumdog. Heck, I know what the slums look like and I ain't seen either of those stars around my block. I'll probably go check it out before the week is out. I don't want to sound prejudice *lol*.

I have seen Oceans, 11, 12, and 13, Yvette, as well as all 3 of the Jason Bourne Movies with Matt Damon.

I subscribe to HBO, ShowTime and Starz, and I see all of the "latest" pics when they come on these "On Demand" cable movie channnels about 9 months after their opening in the regular movie houses. I also check out a lot of old vintage films as well as all-black ones.

Watching a movie is in the rotation I go through during the 24-hour course of my living around the clock. This is what being "retired" is all about, to me. :-)

I'd also like to hear from my sister in The Chocolate City, Ms expresso. Yep, Creamy-Steamy-Chocolate Latte. I wonder if she can break away from that rapper long enough to give us her opinion on the Oscars.

Well, IMO, the Oscars have gradually slipped into their superficial mode. This is what I've deduced from reading and watching.

Once a dark horse, "Slum Dog Millionaire" has surged to the head of the pack, squeezing "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" into the also-ran ranks. "Slum Dog" has become a favorite because it is a Cinderella story.

Super star Brad Pitt has sorta slipped out of favor because his peers are probably a little envious at all the adulation he and Angie command. Sean Penn's sensitive portrayal of a homosexual has given him an edge in Best Actor category among the heavily gay Hollywood community. Down and out actor Mickey Rourke is a a sentimental favorite because he scored a come back in his role as an over the hill Wrestler in the movie of the same name. Ditto for Frank Langella who wasn't the first choice for the role of the disgraced president in Nixon/Frost.

The late Heath Ledger is a shoo-in as best supporting actor for his Joker portrayal in "Bat Man". Robert Downey's tour de force in "Tropic Thunder" as a white man playing a white man playing a black man will be an undeserved loser in this contest.

Kate Winslett is a little over exposed because of her being nominated for, and winning both starring and supporting actress awards presented by other Actors guilds. Perennial nominee Meryl Streep's stunning performance in "Doubt" is still a serious contender for winning an Oscar

Some old favorites were snubbed this year, most notable Clint Eastwood who wrote, acted in, and penned a song from the movie, "Gran Torino". Leonardo DiCaprio was also notable among the missing for his outstanding stint in in "Revolutionary Road". The overlooking of "The Dark Knight" from the bat man franchise was also a big surprise in the best pictre category.

Of course, the 2 black actresses in contention for supporting roles are getting plenty of praise but are probably splitting the votes cast for them decreasing their chances of taking anything home.

I don't have any predictions. Hollywood might decide to reward one of its own by picking "Benjamin Button" over India's "Slum dog" The intensse competition over these 2 films might allow another movie to slip in and take it all.

This is your pop culture vulture signing off...

Well Cynique, as much as I hate to agree with you, it looks like you've done your homework.

Let me start with the also-rans. Clint Eastwood shouldn't have the Oscar that he already has ...imo. I saw Gran Torino while I was looking over my shoulder during a Bid Whist game. He is lucky his name is even being mentioned.

DiCaprio is a fine actor. If he ever gets the right part he going to blow away the competition. Tonight, I am going to watch him in The Aviator.

Cinderella stories do not always play well at the Oscars. You hit on something. Sometimes it's The USA against the world. I haven't looked but sometimes it's about who made the film. Money talks.

I've never thought about the gay element in Hollywood. In fact I don't know the core of the voting personel.

Some do not think Brad Pitt is really a good actor. I would disagree with that but this role didn't really require him to strecthout. The character had a magnetic draw but it's my opinion that this is not his best performance. Then again, as I look around the field of candidates, he could walk away with this one. There's one element of the voting process that I have not looked into, that could tip thangs. Mickey Rourke surprised many with his victory. Depending on when the votes were cast, he could have seen his day. *Okay Mickey, you got yours now get your scrungy looking self out of here, this is the Oscars, boy*.

I've been saving "Doubt". I have not watch it yet. Meryle Streep has never let me down. You are correct, she's up against a formidable foe in Kate Winslet. Let's see what happens.

I am not going to mention the Sistas. I'll just ditto what you said. You know my take on that.

I feel a little embarrassed. I didn't even know that Robert Downing was in Tropic Thunder. I started watching it with a lady visitor (wasn't the plan, I was watching it when she came by) and I never finished watching it. I like comedy but I never got back to it. Nevertheless, I think he can forget about winning for the role you mentioned.

You never know and it's only my opinion.

I don't know about this women, the one that came by while I was watching Tropic Thunder. She's here again. Oh well, I'll see if she likes The Aviator.

Don't mean to be disrespectful, Brown Robin, but I'd put on a pair of pink panties and fishnet stockings before I watch the scanks in the city. She can go watch it but y'all never catch my black a** watching dem Ho's. White girls too! Nope. I'd rather watch Medea go to jail ...and we all know what I think of Mr. Perry's movies. Yeah, I'd get me a wig just like Medea's and paint my lips bright red and tell my lady to turn on the flashlight. That's as close as "we" are going to get to nastiness in this city :-).

The movie I am recommending these days? "The Great Debators" which you have probably all ready seen, right?

Okay Brown Robin, am with you. I loved the Illusionist. Don't fib, did you have the ending figured out? Be smooth with your answer because you know there are TC's police around here. Btw, there's another movie based on a similar plot, that is just as good. Some would say that it's better. In fact, I learned about it through a discussion like this. I was saying how much I like The Illusionist and they hit me with the other one. But dang it, I can't remember the name of it and I just watched it about 3 months ago ...I'll call my son. He's the one that pulled my coat on it. I think you will enjoy it.

Anyway, I've not seen Jumper. Although I don't rely on many critics to judge my opinion of a movie, few said this was a movie to watch. I have a hard time getting into the mystic movement type movies. I liked Matrix but it's not my normal cup of tea.

Church ....Mom's ...Superbowl at home

Yes, I want to see The Prestige and no I did not figure out the ending of Illusionist, which made it awesome.. Sorta like "The Usual Suspects"... folks claimed to have that one figured out but it threw me for a loop.

The reason I give JUMPER props is because the same guy directed the Bourne movie and the special effects are supa! Plus JUMPER is based on a series of YA books, which gives me as an author much hope.

BTW, hope Pittsburgh does not break your heart today. LOL

I caught a movie the other night that was surprisingly good. I missed the start of it and am no teven sure of the name (something about "money"). It starred Queen Latifah and Diane Keaton and I can't remember the other young actress's name. Oh, and Ted Danson was in it, too. They worked for the government in the division that destroys paper money to take it out of circulation. Anyway, it is a heist movie, and I love "big score" films. Plus the women were bright and their relationship--though they were all very different from each other--was fun and funny. Oh--and Queen's part especially was nice--not at all mammy-ish and she even get a real sweet love interest.

I never remember seeing it advertised as a theater release, but I don't see too many movies in first run release so I could have just missed it. Oh--it also had a nice twist at the end.

I have not seen Benjamin Button but I had a disturbing dream related to it. An old Brad Pitt face was on a little baby body, along with that terrible "baby" from that Wayans brothers movie and I had to take care of them as someone had switched my children for them.

**shudder**

I was out of town and missing my kids--that probably explains the switch. But I have no idea why my subconscious chose those two! LOL

Hello

I don't know Yvettep, if you believe dreams come true you better start putting an addition on your house. Maybe God is telling you that there's a baby in the oven.

That movie was Mad Money. It didn't do to good at the box office. Maybe it was because Ted Danson was in it. He left the bar and nobody remembered his name. My sister really enjoyed it though.

Carey, noooooooooooooooo! I don't care about babies in ovens so long as it is not my oven. Tell all the deities to keep their mouths shut regarding that topic. LOL

Hello

Wow weeeeeee, I almost found myself in the wrong place at the wrong time, watching the wrong movie.

Yesterday I planned a full day of sharing, eating good food, laughing and watching the Superbowl. My mother doesn't get out very much anymore. So I decided to go visit her and take along the sermon from the afternoon service. Now, don't get it twisted. I am just another slob in the church trying to find reasons for being there. I've found a few but that's another story. Anyway, we can purchase the CD's for about 7 bucks and the video for around 10.

Mom doesn't cook that much anymore either. A few months ago she burnt some beans in a crockpot. Yeah, a crockpot ...how do you burn beens in a crockpot?

Anyway, my friend and I headed to mom's house with a meal of Turkey Legs smothered in gravy, baked potatoes and corn. Nothing big, just an homecooked midwestern meal.

Well, as you know, mothers are going to do what they want to do and although my mother knew I was coming by, she had already eaten when I got there. One of my brothers had gone by and fatten her up with fried chicken. Mom loves fried chicken. I was a little hurt that she didn't wait for me but hey, fried chicken in the hand is better than Turkey on the way.

So, church in momma's house was about to happen. I put in the CD and about 5 minutes into the thing, momma fell asleep. She must have thought she was back at church listening to old Pastor Barber.

Okay, momma didn't eat the meal that I brought her and she didn't sit through the sermon. I thought, what the heck, We'll just watch the movie that was in the player when we arrived. My lady was with me so we'd just check out the movie and listen to my mother snore.

My lady had taken the movie out of the player so I didn't know what it was. I remember asking her if we had seen it and she said that she didn't think so. Now, here is when I knew I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The title of the movie popped up and it was "Not Easily Broken". OH NO! .. a movie by T D Jakes and **SCREAMING** .... TYLER PERRY!

Now what do I do? A chick flick and I am with two chicks. Well, my mother, who's still sleeping and my lady, who's jumping with joy over the discovery that this ...ahhh ....this chick-flick-movie-thang was about to take place and I was stuck in the middle.

Before we left, mom woke up with that look and voice that only mother's have, she said, "oh, are yawl leaving already". I told her that we were going home to watch the Superbowl and asked her if she was planning on watching it. She said that she was and that she'd be rooting for the Bears. Yeah, moms, ya gotta love 'em.

The Superbowl was great!
