Derek Walcott was born in St. Lucia in 1930. He divides his time between New York and the Caribbean

Derek Walcott
Out of the turmoil emerges one emblem, an engraving —

a young Negro at dawn in straw hat and overalls,

an emblem of impossible prophecy, a crowd

dividing like the furrow which a mule has ploughed,

parting for their president: a field of snow-flecked

cotton

forty acres wide, of crows with predictable omens

that the young ploughman ignores for his unforgotten

cotton-haired ancestors, while lined on one branch, is

a tense

court of bespectacled owls and, on the field's

receding rim —

a gesticulating scarecrow stamping with rage at him.

The small plough continues on this lined page

beyond the moaning ground, the lynching tree, the tornado's

black vengeance,

and the young ploughman feels the change in his veins,

heart, muscles, tendons,

till the land lies open like a flag as dawn's sure

light streaks the field and furrows wait for the sower.

Well Cagedbird, I need to take you on the road. You are my biggest fan.

Here's a little something. It's a composite of essays I scratched. Your request ushered in this poetic form.

Dreams deferred

Six generations far away dreams came true.
Denied by law, deferred by default
The sign said HALT, but not closure
Just limited exposure

A slave no more
Skills in hand
A new plan
Someone is waiting

Grandma said, "Grandpa Green was a slave"--
Raved---"he was a horse doctor"
School?
Not today, 10 kids to raise; a dream deferred.

Mother's proud
Dream in hand
High School Diploma
Grandpa Green was a slave

I played house that day
Baby came my way
Dreams on hold
Grandma raised 10 kids

Baby and wife, new dreams, new life
New life indeed, a grandson blessed me
And my wife
She passed away before he could say
Hi Grandma

His school held elections, no songs just lessons
No recess, had to learn the process
The voice of the vote
He was voted president of his first grade class

He declared to his mother that he and Obama were just alike. She said,"yes, you are both black"
He said, "wrong mommy! we're both presidents"

Ignoring the comparison that most adults make
He focused on something greater than race
To some
Yet he's to young to understand the significance of the color of his face
He won a race

I am going to Atlanta for the inauguration of the President. His name is Carey--he's my grandson.
Dreams deferred, new dreams to fullfill
Grandpa Green was a slave

Hi Eve, I was talking with my grandson and he wants to know if he can get ol'girls digit :-).

He's the president you know. Well, he doesn't have a job and he occasionally pees on himself but he's working on that. Tell your grandbaby he'd like to take her for a ride. He doesn't have a car and doesn't know how to ride a bike but I think Santa is bring him one for Christmas. If that doesn't turn her head tell her he'd like to read to her. Yep, he can read and has some cool bathtub toys. Btw, he was thinking about sending her a letter but he can't sign his own name. Well, he can but few can read it.

Thanks

Grandpa

That 2!

See, I can't seem to shake you.

Are we going to dirty Rondall's floor "et tu, Rufus"?

You knock my poetry, cuss me out, hate on my game (your not funny Carey), tell me to shut up and now you're over here with your wicked ways.

You know the song: "Shoe" fly don't bother me, "Crude" fly don't bother me, ooouuuu fly don't bother me, your leather face is scaring me.

I didn't know you had a monopoly on this thread, Carey. And it's not like I didn't post on it earlier.
BTW, I've never cussed you out, and have you perhaps learned a lesson that if "you don't start no s h i t, there won't be no s h i t".
