Actually the problem is cultural.

I know we talked about this over a year ago and it is amazing the times is still writing about this in such a big way.
Again the Times loves to write articles that play up on conflicts between Black and whites in Harlem.
I guess the NY Times will be creaming their pants if there is a race riot in Harlem... |

Why is Manhattan worth a dayam OTHER than that rich White foks think it is?
I mean, why should one be any more motivated to be there than they would any other NYC borough? |

ABM, for the "city" type of person with plenty of cheddar, Manhattan offers more than you can image.
For the professional, working and living in Manhattan is a great convenience. If you work in say midtown and live in Harlem your commute is 20 minutes, max, door to door and costs $2.00 or less. Alternatively, you can hop in a cab, ride a bike, drive your own or even walk (through central park is nice).
That is just the commute, but the advatnages are the same for dining, entertainment, recreation, cultural, religous.
Sure you can get this stuff in Brooklyn or the Bronx; but in terms of scale, variety, abundance there really is no comparison... |

Why is Manhattan worth a dayam OTHER than that rich White foks think it is?
I mean, why should one be any more motivated to be there than they would any other NYC borough?
(why would you have lived in Rome during the Roman Empire? Or in London in 1900? Why would you have lived in Athens during the height of the glory of Athens rather than in some small village outside it (I forget what the name of the little community Athens was in)
America is still the richest and most powerful nation in the world--in history. The core of the financial system of the U.S. is there.
For some games New York is THE place to be. If you play jazz, if you are a writer, or a painter, a stage actor.
The core of the U.S. publishing industry is there. Everybody who is anybody is trying to get there.
In 1998 I went to a reading given by Edwidge Danticat and Walter Mosely at NYU. It was free and open to the public. Danny Glover, Junot Diaz and several other writers whose names now escape me were there.
It was like that everyplace. I would go to these gatherings and run into writers and celebrities I had only heard of.
Here in St. Louis, it is something if I read poetry once a week. Up there I could read three or four times a day at least if I wanted to.
While in readings I met poets from Japan, Australia, all over the U.S.
Any and every possible thing you could want is there--except maybe skiing or something. I could go on and on why somebody would prefer Manhattan to anyplace on earth.
The other bouroughs are Peoria (and where people actually LIVE. Manhattan is the core of civilization. |

Chris, you can actually ski in central park. During the winter they blow snow. But in reality Vermont, some of the best skiing in the country (outside of the moutain states) is a 4 hour drive.
That is the other thing; if you are into the beach, mountains or lakes (non-city stuff) it is all less than an hour's drive...
That said some people hate NYC. But then again some people hate Blacks, Jews, Homosexuals, reading...
The problem with NY is that it is not a place for those with families who are struggling financially. In many cases they simply can't take advantage of all the city has to offer.
My wife taught in Brooklyn, and tells the story of a kid who asked her, "what is that over there?" They were looking across the East river at Manhattan. The 9th grader had never been there...
As a kid growing up (in Manhattan), I'd never been to a broadway play, a restaurant, a concert or even a brownstone (home). We rarely left the neighborhood.
After 125th street (main shopping throughfare in Harlem) went completely down the drain, we started going to midtown to shop. Even then I really was not aware of what was available in the big city.
If was really not until I got into college that I really began to benefit from the city. I guess only then because I was exposed to people in higher economic brackets. |

That said some people hate NYC
(I wanna tell ya. I am from the Midwest. Here we have periods when there are no people and there is quiet. And I live in the heart of the inner city in St. Louis.
There are times when there is no traffic. Nobody on the street.
Up in NYC, you always got people people people, crowds of them.
I remember it getting to me.
I remember going up in that Library, where is it, on 52nd Street, and sitting down and staring at the cieling for almost an hour so I didn't have to look at no people.
I think it gets to people. That and the pace.
I can see why folks would drink and do heroin in NYC. I think anybody doing coke or uppers or LSD is looking to burn themselves out.
NYC is its own cocaine. |

People, people, people...
After living in Florida for almost a year I came to back to NY to live. I went to a movie to catch a 1 AM (yes AM) show. After the movie, about 3:30 AM, I was like Damn what are all these folks doing out on the street at this time in the monring?!
It was indistinquishible from 12 noon save the darkness. People were grocery shopping coming out of movies or otherwise milling about -- I'd forgotten what it was like.
So far Harlem is not that bad. My favorite time is the morning say 7AM few people are out and about it is quite, the drug dealers and corner boys still have a few hours before they appear. It is really very nice... |

Obviously, you've never been to Staten Island, lol. It stinks...literally!
I enjoy Manhattan, but I love Brooklyn. Manhattan is just endless...everything. Broadway. Museums. The library. People, people, people. Truly the city that never sleeps. Endless possibilities. Manhattan is also convenient...Grand Central Station, Metro North, hotels, taxis (most of the time, depending on where you are)--good luck getting a cab into or out of the other boroughs.
Brooklyn, on the other hand, is COMFORTABLE. Ft. Greene, Bed Stuy, JUNIOR's (best cheesecake in the world)...the little out of the way Caribbean and African spots, the neighborhoods. Love it.
Queens gave us the lusciousness that is LL--'nuff said.

Harlem is actually in the center of Manhattan...
Ferociouskitty I lived in Brooklyn for 11 years. I appreciate the more neighborly feel of Brooklyn (similiar to that of Harlem). I also went to High School in Brooklyn. |

That's a good question, actually. I don't know.
I guess were I to temporarily drop my Second City Chicago hate, I'd have to at least consider NYC to be amongst the top 3 - 5 choices. |

Abm, I think Chicago is right up there as one of the world's great cities.
The country's tallest building, Johnson Publications, and of course "The Bears". Plus it is home the Cyniqueness and yourself.
The first time I was in Chicago was my first BEA in 2000 (I think). Chicago's BEA's are the best. NYC's conventions center blows conpared to the McCormick Center. One of NYC weaknesses, in my opinion, is the lack of a world class convention center.
After NYC, Chicago, LA, it really drops off very quickly in the US. Houston is the next largest city, but I can't put it, at least not yet, in the same category as Chi-town or NYC.
Off the top of my head you'd have to throw in London and Tokyo.
An investment bank I used to work for spoke about the BRIC countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and the next big econonies cities in these countries... maybe one day but not today.
Some African cities like Nigeria are bandied about as the next global centers -- but they still have a way to go...

Actually I saw Cool J a couple of weeks ago at the NY Book Launch Party for Grand Master Flash's new memoir (http://hiphopbookclub.com). It was relatively weak party, but I have to admit L2 looked good actually Grand Master Flash did not look too shabby either. |

Troy, unless those rumors involve LL holding the camcorder at one of R's romper room video shoots, or LL storing severed heads in his Subzero freezer, there is nothing that you could say to change my opinion of him! LOL I know what all that wink-winking usually means, and that definitely would not disqualify LL. You can look at anyone, no matter who they like to be looked at by.

Ya got that right! Manhattan is absolutely incredible. I just never had the money to maximize my interests and indulgences.

I guess I can speak to this. I've lived and been in NYC, Chicago, LA, London and Tokyo. They are all incredible cities. I never had an idle or boring moment in any of the aforementioned. But when the dust clears and the final verdict is in -it is NYC. Sorry to offend those who disagree. I have no dog in the fight. I'm from the Mid-West so there is no need for me to lie. |
