Obama's current lead in pledged delegates -- a lead of about 150 -- might diminish in the next nine contests, but Clinton will not overtake him; he will lead by at least 100 pledged delegates. Just as Carter did.

In 1980, super-delegates might well have decided that Carter was unelectable and moved to Kennedy, who certainly could not have done worse in the general election than did Carter.

And superdelegates in 2008 might make a parallel judgment -- but if, and only if, they are convinced that Clinton would have a better chance of winning in Novem-ber than would Obama.

Clinton's recent victories in large swing states -- particularly in Ohio and Pennsylvania -- have shown strength.

These contests also have revealed an apparent Obama weakness: his inability to appeal to white, working class voters.
