i haven't bought an actual cd in about 2 years now, i buy all of my music as mp3's. apparently everyone else is too, because the cd sales keep dropping every year. anyways for those of you who didn't know amazon sells mp3's and it seems to be at a cheaper rate than the other heavy weight i-tunes. also when you buy your music from amazon it comes to you as an mp3 so you don't have to go through the extra trouble of converting your music if you don't have an ipod. anyways i just bought d'angelos "how does it feel" song from off of their a second a go (can't get it on i-tunes unless u buy the whole album. to find it just google amazon mp3.

this concludes my pubic service anouncement :-)

LOL @D23!

I just tried Amazon's service yesterday when I bought Jay-Z's American Gangster (no longer available on iTunes). I was very impressed. The software was easy to download. I have shopped there before, so my account info was already on file. It converted easily to go into my iTunes folder, PLUS it was $2 less than what I would have paid on iTunes.

The download itself (of the music files) was slower than I am used to but not enough to make the overall experience well worth it.

Don't count CD's completely out D23. You need them to back up your music to a CD, DVD or magnetic tape medium. When your hard drive crashes (and it will eventually) or when your OS becomes corrupt (and that will eventually happen also) to the point it requires a fresh install on the same partition you have your music stored on (most people only have one partition, C:/ -a very, very serious major mistake!), you're going to loose all your music unless you have some serious data recovering skills (e.g. using Knoppix, a bootable live Linux distro that is excellent for data recovery). I had a friend who worked for years to build an incredible music library. When the big crash came -it was a done deal. This happened a few years ago. I talked to her three days ago and she still hasn't gotten over it. Best time to repair the hole in the roof is when it's not raining! Also consider making a music DVD. Nero (recording program) is very good at doing this. Something to think about......

Doberman23, I like the Jay-Z album a lot. I almost did not buy it. I was ticked off that he is not releasing it single by single...thought I only wanted "I Know." But I kind of see what he is trying to accomplish by encouraging the purchase of the entire "concept." He still strays from the story he is trying to tell, with all that self-referential rap BS. But in general I respect how he is trying to tell a full story, a la Curtis Mayfield with Superfly. (Not as great, of course, but A for effort...)

Ntfs_encryption, re: Nero--explain further, please. I checked their website but couldn;t make heads or tails of the techspeak. Right now I back up to CDs pretty religiously after a terrible experience of losing my entire library like your friend. (iTunes was nice enough to give me a one-time restore of what I bought from them, but all the classic stuff I had burned myself I had to re-do manually.) I am definitely in the market for another solution, though, because the CD-backup is tedious.

I am considering Apple's on-line option, but I do not know if I want to do the $99 bucks a year or whatever...

ALso, what do you mean about the partition thing? Thanks much. And sorry about all the free advice I'm asking! I'll put your consulting check in the mail LOL!

"Ntfs_encryption, re: Nero--explain further, please. I checked their website but couldn;t make heads or tails of the techspeak."

No problem. Nero is a very popular video/media and data recording/editing program. But if you can't spring the bucks, no problem. There are seemingly countless freeware programs you can use to do the job. You can download and use various tools for recording, ripping, backing up your data and making ISO dics. Go to: http://www.webattack.com and look under the freeware (not shareware!) and you will see all types of neat free programs that will do anything you want.

Understood, that is why I suggested making music DVD's. I know Nero can do this. As you know, mp3 files are small compressed files (totally inferior to a CD WAV file as a CD is inferior to a vinyl record) so you can load a ton of them onto a DVD. As I said, Nero specializes in this. If you can't afford it, you can acquire it (along with any other software) via the use of P2P torrents -all free (but before doing so, there are a few things you really need to know and understand...Hint...Hint...)!!

I would highly recommend making music DVD's to back up your music. For more info, just Google -"making music DVDs". Remember, a CD is only 700 megs while a standard DVD is 4.7 gigs and a double layer DVD holds 8.5 gig! You could probably fit your entire mp3 music library on one DL DVD!

I am considering Apple's on-line option, but I do not know if I want to do the $99 bucks a year or whatever...

Don't bother.....

ALso, what do you mean about the partition thing?

A hard drive is like a file cabinet. You can have one drawer or multiple drawers. For example, if you bought a 500 gig HD (it's really never 500 or any other size advertised on the box -they use a complex math computation for that particular number, very misleading but it's actually less -e.g. a 200 gig HD is actually around 196 or 195 gigs), once it is formatted, it will have only one major partition: C:\ (it automatically defaults to that configuration). But you can partition it into multiple partitions using Windows Disk Management (which I would not recommend) or third party software like Partition Magic (by Norton). Or you can get a number of partitioning programs free. No problem. Anyhoo, for a hypothetical example, you could partition your 500 gig HD into two partitions (C:\ and D:\) of 250 gigs apiece. Or you could partition it into four partitions (C:\- D:\-E:\ -and F:\) of 125 gigs. It's up to you.

Why partition? Because you want to separate your valuable data (e.g. pictures, critical Word docs, Excel docs, music, movies, etc) from the OS. Partitioning makes it much easier to retrieve your data if the OS becomes corrupted beyond repair. I tell people this all the time. The ones who don't listen always come whining and crying to me when the shit hits the fan.

Thanks much.

No problem.

And sorry about all the free advice I'm asking! I'll put your consulting check in the mail...

I'm waiting...... Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

"ntfs i am not talking about blank cds, i am talking about buying a cd from a store like best buy or circuit city's music area."

Uhhhhhhh....Ok. But you did ask me about Nero, partitioning hard drives and when you said; "Right now I back up to CDs pretty religiously after a terrible experience of losing my entire library like your friend.......", I thought you were talking about backing up your mp3 recordings to CD. I did not know you meant backing up an entire CD.

"as far as back-up i have a (mac)zip iomega external hard drive which i keep my music on so the songs wont eat away at my memory and i use a portable 8gb drive called the monster. i got it off of........"

I also did not know you were a Mac man. But you did say, "Apple's on-line..". My bad. But you use a 8gig portable drive called monster? Wow! That’s small. I just bought a USB flash drive that holds 8 gigs!!! I have a ton of external drives and too many extra hard drives to count. Gotta collect and pull off all the data and consolidate in on one of the many external drives I have and back up the critical stuff to DL DVD's. As you know, external hard drives now come in a single terabyte. Hard core...!!!!

"Ntfs, this has been incredibly helpful. Thanks!"

No problem Ms. Yvette. Glad I could help.

yvette i haven't had a chance to really listen to the jay-z cd yet, and you're right the amazon stuff does take a minute to download but it's still better than i tunes :-)
i'll prolly listen to it this weekend ... this year is going by ridiculously fast and i am losing track of days :p
