Looks like Senator Obama will not be attending Tavis Smiley's annual STATE OF THE BLACK NATION (or whatever he calls it) but Hillary will.

Here's Roland Martin's take

Good. Now's NOT the time to pull out the black half. Universal appeal and eyes on the prize is the key to success at this juncture. Get to the presidency, and then he can show up on anything he wants, qualified - of course. Tavis and all of the other hot heads out there need to cool their heels and just give the program a little more time.

Robynmarie, Roland Martin's take seemed very wise.

Nels, "...pull out the black half."?!?

I guess I don't understand how appearing at this gathering would hurt Senator Obama. African Americans are his biggest supporters.

I am afraid we (black folks) are doing what we are prone to do. Put our full support behind someone, and get so little in return. *sigh*

He should be made to answer the question as to why he won‘t be there.

I'd like to know.

I hope it's televised. ahee-ahee!

Well, obviously in order to keep his white voters from bolting, Obama has to assure them that he's not THAT kind of a black person, not somebody who gathers with others blacks to complain about racism and um, you know, stuff like that. Rest assured that Obama is a good nonthreatening black person who wants to change the emphasis on race, (except when it translates into blacks votes.)
But I love Obama. He can't help it if he is expedient just like all of the other politicos. Change, indeed,

It makes for interesting TV. But WTF has been the actual, practical, tangible good has come from this program?

WHAT?

And one thing I've always observed to be glaringly ommitted from that program has been how there is almost no stressing of the importances of Black men and women committing to each other and raising children together (I think the lone Republican speaker during the last year's program, a lady state senator, did so.). You can't do much of a dayam thing to remedy the many problems we have until THAT point is potently observed.

So...where there hell are Tavis' Black WIFE and CHILDREN?

I'm very SUSPICIOUS of a man who presumes himself to be capable of guiding millions of Black foks YET seems, for whatever reason, uninterested in or incapable of making a family - the core and bedrock of ANY people, community and/or race - with ONE Black person.

And if Hillary does attend the program (and the ONLY reason she would would be to attempt to make up for the race-baiting tactics she and Bill have pulled during the champaign) I hope someone ask her to provide an HONEST answer to why she and the Clinton Administration promote and sign-off on Welfare Reform, 3-strike prison sentencing, NAFTA and the Iraq War and why she thinks LBJ did more to help Black foks than MLK.

I too hope HRC is asked the hard questions should she appear at Tavis' gathering.

But this is the real reason Senator Obama won't be sitting down for a chat-

I've enjoyed most of the interviews I've heard with Sen Obama. Here is a recent one with Michel Martin: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18876524.

One of the things he addresses is voting rights for DC--a big issue for me personally.

Not sure about that, Tonya, since no president up to now has really addressed it, let alone accomplished it. Even our "first Black one" did not have it as a priority! LOL!

ABM, I am just curious: What makes you think Smiley seems unable/uninterested in having a family? Because he is whatever age he is and is not married and does not have kids? I do not know enough about him to know if he has ever addressed this publicly. But I'd rather he (or anyone) not partner up and have little ones just to achieve some sort of authenticity...

Hey Robyn, I hope HRC is fully vetted by Tavis Smiley too. But honestly I think she's done more than her share to resurrect feminism. Win or lose women will be thanking her for decades for that…especially if she ends up a martyr.

Tonya-At least she is showing up. It could be a hostile audience, but she is never afraid to go into the Lion's den. You can tell a lot about how a person acts, not when they are winning, but when they are facing adversity.

Senator Obama is into avoidance. Funny thing is, Senator Obama will be the main topic of discussion at this forum, yet he refuses to attend.

Do you think we will see another viable woman candidate for the POTUS? If so, who do you think as a shot?
HRC is only 60, if she doesn't make it these time, she can always run again-after the guys mess things up one more time. LOL.

Robyn, If Hillary loses this race the next president (after 4-8 more years of McCain & the Republicans) will almost certainly be a woman. The sad part tho is it'll be done out of overwhelming guilt.

Yvettep,

It not an issue of authenticity as much as one of 'relatability'. Can one actually RELATE to the key, core problems you propose to cure within the Black community?

You can't effectively educate and train Black children, protect them from drugs, AIDS/HIV, racism and prepare them to be good, productive adults, parents and citizens if their family - the primary basis from which they are to learn and receive such - is in shambles.

And, I think, that program failure to focus on Black family, particular with and starting from the core unit of Black woman and Black man, is reflective Tavis' (and MANY other Black foks) missing (or avoiding) the true source of MOST of our current problems.

It's easy to spout off kneegrow cure-alls when you have no real, tangible connection to the greatest problem that confronts all of us: the dying Black family.

If you don't really know and feel what it means to struggle to make a Black family, to worry about, struggle with and fight for a wife or husband and/or children you cannot not know a substantial part of what the Black experience is REALLY all about.

I thought about Claire McCaskill, too, though I am not sure how she would play in the bigger, urban areas. There is a congresswoman here in California named Loretta Sanchez. She is a possiblity.

Robyn, I think that's why she backed Obama - to increase her standings in urban areas, but it might have been a mistake. Loretta Sanchez sounds great. A secret dream ticket of mine is a Clinton-Waters ticket. :-) I can dream, can’t I?? LOL

Tavis comes from a very large family; he has seven younger brothers and 2 older sisters. He's not entirely clueless when it comes to family life and child rearing.
