I certainly wouldn't wager any money on this race. There is no precedent for it. Who can beat an old white guy for president??
A shrewd white woman?
A brilliant black man?
How big a role will ageism, sexism, racism and religion play in the final count?

So far, the only thing that seems to be certain in these proceedings is that the polls are flawed and that endorsements are just eye-candy. The Kennedys couldn't sway Massachusetts voters and Oprah couldn't sway Californian Hispanics. Even the media had to retract its projection after calling Hillary the winner in Missouri. (They didn't allow for chrishyaden stuffing the ballot boxes in St Louis for Obama.)

Post election thoughts and predictions...

-The Dem nominee probably won't be decided until March. Wonderful. More people will have their say

McCain and Huckabee teamed up against Mitt to deny him victory in Virgina. Are we looking at a McCain/Huckabee ticket?

-Big name endorsements did not seem to make a difference. Maybe celebrities should do what George Clooney (an Obama supporter) does and stay the heck out of it

-Kudos to all the progressive men who voted for HRC

-There will be a recount in Missouri

-In California, those with a high school diploma, mostly blue collar workers voted for HRC. I expected Senator Obama would get their votes

-White women are HRC greatest supporters. In the general, I believe HRC will receive votes from GOP women who want to see a woman in the WH

LOL, uh-oh Dobes, look what I just found on the web

Hillary Clinton Favored by Bookmakers to Beat McCain (Update1)

By Mark Deen

Feb. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Senator Hillary Clinton has become the favorite to win the U.S. presidency after picking up support in Super Tuesday primaries yesterday, bookmakers in London said.

Ladbrokes Plc and William Hill Plc both ranked Clinton as the most likely to win the general election in November, followed by her Republican challenger John McCain. Both gambling houses ranked Barack Obama third-most-likely to win.

The findings, based on bets taken, follow Clinton's victories in New York and California, the two biggest prizes up for grabs yesterday. McCain swept to a commanding lead in the race to win the Republican Party's presidential nomination.

``Hillary has won the states she needed, and we would expect her price to contract,'' Robin Hutchison, a spokesman for Ladbrokes, said today. ``The Republican race is over as far as we're concerned.''

Obama, competing with Clinton for the Democratic nomination, trailed McCain in the bookmakers' assessment. He prevailed in Connecticut, Georgia, Delaware, Alabama and nine other states.

The odds on Clinton moving into the White House are now 6-4 at Ladbrokes, meaning speculators can win 6 pounds ($11.76) for every 4 pounds bet on the former first lady. Odds for a victory by McCain were 7-4 and 9-4 for Obama.

``Hillary and Barack are still virtually neck and neck,'' said Graham Sharpe, a spokesman for William Hill.

William Hill gave Clinton 11-8 odds to win and McCain 13-8. Obama ranked third by that bookmaker at 9-4.

For the Republicans, McCain won six of the eight states that award all their delegates to the winner, giving him 613 delegates and a commanding lead over his closest challenger, Mitt Romney, who has 269.

Ladbrokes has taken about 1 million pounds ($1.96 million) in bets on the presidential race so far, a figure the bookmaker expects to double by November. Across the U.K. industry, bets will probably amount to 10 million pounds by the time the final vote is held, Hutchinson said.

Mitt Romney's odds of becoming president this year are 25-1, while Mike Huckabee's are 33-1, Ladbrokes said.

Why are you congratulating Billary? She "won" the state of Cali and her hometowns NY and ARK. OK. The bottom line is the NUMBER OF delegates which were split and landed old cryin' Billary and Obama in almost a dead even tie! Some DO call it a tie. So if anything it's a celebration for OBAMA! Cuz Bill thought super Tuesday would finish him off BUT HE'S STILL IN IT TO WIN IT! GO BAMA! GO!!!!

Not on this thread they don't. :-)

"So if anything it's a celebration for OBAMA!"

No if anything you need to start your own thread for OBAMA. :-)

A_womon,

Did you see the election returns of the states Obama won last night? They were pretty bizarre.

In the states that are almost entirely White, Obama won in LANDSLIDES. Hell, I think he got a frickin' EIGHTY percent of the vote in Idaho.

Either there are LOTS of White foks who like Obama. Or LOTS of White foks who loathe Billary.

Perhaps it's lot of BOTH.

It'll be interesting to see how that manifest should Hillary win the Democratic nomination.

One theory I've heard is that some folks have switched affiliation from Republican to Dem just to vote against Hillary. Obama carried Red States vs. Hillary, but he won't likely carry them vs. a Republican challenger.

Not too far-fetched when I have one friend that switched from Independent to Republican just for the opportunity to vote against "Ghouliani" as he calls him.

Hi Abm,

Yes I watched. I heard one guy say that he wouldn't vote for mccain. That he would rather not vote at all than to vote for mccain. He said he'd voted republican all his life and the only thing that kept him from voting for Obama was that he (obama) was for gun control!

Things are going to change, but in a way over which Obama has no control. America is evolving on its own and time is what will precipitate change. No Dynasty lasts forever, Empires eventually crumble. The USA is fragmenting into too many opposing factions. The infra structures of our cities are at risk, our resources exhausted, we are not prepared for disasters - man-made or natural ones. In 10 years chaos may be upon and anarchy the rule. Have a good day.

Ferociouskitty,

What you describe is why I said what happened lastnight might be as much about loathing of Clinton as lovin' on Obama. But whats also interesting is how much resentment many Republicans have of the John McCain, who is the probable GOP nominee. Perhaps many of those who voted for Obama lastnight were voting AGAINST Hillary. But many of them might also avoid voting altogether if Obama wins the Democratic nomination while those same foks might be riled into a White hot frenzy to take down Hillary in the general election.

ABM:

Dang all this intrigue! :-) I must say, though, it's great to have everyday folk investing this much time, thought, and energy in the political process. The first vote I ever cast when I became eligible was for Bill Clinton. That was the last time I felt like my vote mattered. Chalk it up to naivete. But these days, I (and I've heard others say it) feel like The People matter again. After 8 years of bending over and taking it in the you-know-what, it's nice to stand upright again.

Or maybe I'm just sippin' on too much of that Obama "Yes, We Can" Juice. Sigh.

Dobes,

Don't act like you can't buy cigarretes and weed with food stamps. My moneystamps are good bro. It's YOU and the FEDS (the federal reserves) that I am worried about. That's why I'm asking you to pay me in EUROS (sp).
