In sharp contrast to his tough talk about ethics reform in government, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., approached a well-known Illinois political fixer under active federal investigation, Antoin "Tony" Rezko, for "advice" as he sought to find a way to buy a house shortly after being elected to the United States Senate.

The parcel included an adjacent lot which Obama told the Chicago Tribune he could not afford because "it was already a stretch to buy the house."

On the same day Obama closed on his house, Rezko's wife bought the adjacent empty lot, meeting the condition of the seller who wanted to sell both properties at the same time.

Rezko had been widely reported to be under investigation by the U.S. attorney and the FBI at the time Obama contacted him and has since been indicted on corruption charges by a federal grand jury in a case that prosecutors say involves bribes, kickbacks and "efforts to illegally obtain millions of dollars."

This week, a federal judge in Chicago ordered the Rezko trial to begin Feb. 25.

Obama maintains his relationship with Rezko was "above board and legal" but has admitted bad judgment, calling his decision to involve Rezko "a bone-headed mistake."

Rezko's behind-the-scenes connection in the Obama house deal became public as Rezko revealed personal financial details as he sought to post bail.

While Rezko's wife paid the full asking price for the land, Obama paid $300,000 under the asking price for the house. The house sold for $1,650,000 and the price Rezko's wife paid for the land was $625,000.

It looks like Senator Obama took a loan from this guy to buy a million dollar property

ABC News is all over this Rezko case. They are also reporting that Senator Obama has not returned the Rezko campaign contributions.

According to CNN Hillary Clinton GAINED a few votes in poll taken AFTER S.C. She's also looking good on the stump. I think it's over for Obama.

How did Hillary gain votes?
Senator Obama is getting a lot of endorsements.
But will they translate into delegates? Or is it window dressing?

This is what I wonder. Will people resent the idea that high-profile endorsers think they can influence the vote of others. I'll admit that chrishayden inspired me defend whomever he was against, but in the end, Oprah or the Kennedys or Toni Morrison or chrishayden will not make the final decision for me.

"How did Hillary gain votes?"

I have no idea, they're not speculating (for a change :-)).

And I don't think the Kennedy endorsements will make a difference.
I think older people made up their minds by now and younger voters (Barrack’s base) aren't gonna be fazed by no Kennedy’s...lol. I can't imagine that happening, they look too out of touch.

(Speaking of Sen. Kennedy, looks like he's in hot water, big time! This could affect the power of his endorsement as well, considering Hillary has got the female vote locked up.)

Women's group slams Kennedy for 'betrayal'

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy is under heavy fire from a state chapter of the National Organization for Women for his decision to back Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton.

In a sharply critical statement, the New York state chapter of NOW took aim at Kennedy Monday for what it called an "ultimate betrayal," and suggested the Massachusetts Democrat "can't or won't" handle the idea of Clinton becoming President of the United States.

"Sen. Kennedy’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton’s opponent in the Democratic presidential primary campaign has really hit women hard," said the statement. "Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, the Family Leave and Medical Act to name a few."

"And now the greatest betrayal! We are repaid with his abandonment!" the statement continues. "He’s picked the new guy over us. He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton."

After months on the sidelines, Kennedy formally endorsed Obama Monday during a speech at American University, despite reported pleas from the Clinton campaign that he remain neutral. He hailed the Illinois senator for his potential to be a “president who appeals to the hopes of those who still believe in the American dream."

Kennedy also praised Clinton and John Edwards in his speech, saying that “whoever is our nominee will have my enthusiastic support."

But the NOW state chapter suggested Monday Kennedy's decision was a larger representation of society’s ongoing disrespect for women's rights.

"This latest move by Kennedy is so telling about the status of and respect for women’s rights, women’s voices, women’s equality, women’s authority and our ability – indeed, our obligation — to promote and earn and deserve and elect, unabashedly, a president that is the first woman after centuries of men who ‘know what’s best for us.’”

Meanwhile, the national chapter of NOW sought to distance itself from the state chapter’s comments, issuing a statement Monday evening that praised Kennedy's record with respect to women's rights.

"Though the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee has proudly endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton for president, we respect Sen. Kennedy's endorsement," NOW President Kim Gandy said. "We continue to encourage women everywhere to express their opinions and exercise their right to vote."

Kennedy's office has not returned CNN's request for comment.

Wasn't Ted Kennedy the drunken driver that killed a woman that he knew in a car accident, and then left her on the side of the road?

A few years ago, Ted's nephew Dr. William Kennedy Smith was brought to court for rape, and acquitted. After subsequently relocating at a hospital in Chicago, he was accused of sexual harrassment and acquitted under suspicious circumstances. Ted's first wife Joanne is an alcoholic, and Robert Kennedy's son Christopher died from a drug overdose. The Kennedy's in spite of their shining image, like everyone else, have their share of skeletons in their closets.

Yes, Ted was involved in what came to be known by a single word that sank his chances of ever running for president. Chappaquidick. That's where the accident that took the life of Mary Jo Kopecky occurred.
