By William Jelani Cobb
(Article Originally Appeared in the Washing Post, Sunday, January 13, 2008; BOL)

MAN! I could not have said it better myself. This brother has articulated every single point I’m been trying to make on these boards for over a year. His analysis is coherent and spot on.

In my role as a self-appointed polemicist, I still have a little problem with black folks who are contemptuous of black diversity, scornful of people who for whatever reason do not automatically support Obama. There are 40 millions Black people in America and they are not of one mind.

It's easy to slap the "old guard" label on anybody who isn't starry-eyed over Obama. But young black women who support Hillary are not "old guard", and undecided, independent Blacks are not "old guard". They are individuals who weigh all aspects and then make a decision.

And is it wrong to anticipate that a well-connected white president can do more for blacks than a maverik black one? Some blacks are pragmatic and are not pacified by window dressing. Obama cannot get elected without the white vote and he is beholden to them. Just because something is new doesn't mean that it is better.

Any black who wants to vote for Obama is entitled to do so without an explanastion. And any Black who doesn't plan to vote for him, obviously makes this choice for their own personal reasons. And who is to say that they don't have a right to do this??

If he is the Dem candidate, my prime reason in voting for Obama will be because I want to particpate in history. Not because I am enthralled with his dreams of reform.

Hi Troy, I usually post only on the book side of the boards, however, could I blow away some smoke from the blarney in Mr. Jelani Cobb's thesis by noting that it dissembles Jesse Jackson's actual support for Obama by lumping him together with the other quote-unquote old guard leaders who don't support him? The way I understand it is that Jackson just expressed a disagreement over something specific.

Jelani Cobb's book, The Devil and Dave Chappelle, although I've only read some of it, is not too bad, although, naturally, I have some disagreements with it.

Cynique, the slap against the old guard is not solely based upon a lack of love of Mr. Obama, this is just the most the last straw -- at least for me.

How many Black biy have to go uneducated in failing schools before somethings is done?

Steve_s, I have not read the Sr. Jackson's article, Maybe I'll look it up later.

Peace
