Did any one see Shelby Steele on C-Span today? I don’t have time to get into the detials but he was coming up some kind of convoluted logic to rationalize why Obama is unqualified -- talking about masks and stuff. Fortunately there were some thinkng white folks in the audience to pose intelligent question sto challenge his thinking.

The old school Black Political machine that has sat at the lap of the Clintons have been emasculated – good for them they are sorry and largely responsible for the sort state of affair in our community. This camapign has made impotence of the CBC obvious to the most casual of observers (as they used to say in school). So the Congressional Black Causus does not support Obama -- he does not need them. The people are speaking.

Calvin Butts (pastor of Abyssinian Baptist church, a prominent Black church in Harlem) takes tons of money from the Clinton in exchange for an endorsement.

I guess If the Clinton's offered me millions I would take the money and endorse them too. I'm glad -- even they don't have that much money ;-)

troy i didnt see it, but this is nothing new when it comes to black churches and their anti-obama campaigns. i think they fear that obama might not see them as actually helping black communities (which many of them aren't) and their days of getting over may be numbered. the more political a church is, i would think the more shady that they really are.

There is a broad spectrum of black opinions on this subject, and everybody is entitled to perceive Obama's candidacy anyway they choose. If there's room for chrishayden's manical ranting, there's room for Shelby Steele's pontificating.

Is Shelby Steele suggesting that black people not vote for Obama? Or, as a sociologist, is he deconstructing the white psyche when it comes to why they embrace Obama so enthusiastically and then applying his conclusions to point out the difference between adulation and qualification?? To me, this is an interesting phenomenon to intellectualize.

Cynique, intellectualizing is cool, but not while the ship is sinking we don't have that luxury.

Steele should consider using his brain for something a little more useful. But I understand, he is in an ivory tower...

Troy,

I saw the Shelby Steele appearance you're referring to. It's interesting how Steele started out appearing to present some faux-objective analysis of the Obama Phenomenon but as he was questioned he descended into some very OBVIOUS biases he have about Obama.

While I think it's fair to question whether Obama has sufficient experience, Steele was out of his gotdayam mind when he started alluding to Obama being some sort of racially-ambiguous Manchurian Candidate.

Obama's record as a politician at the national level is relatively thin. But there's PLENTY amongst his record, resume, speeches, etc. for one to glean what he is likely to do. The more valid criticism of Obama might be whether or not he CAN and SHOULD do what he's had a history of doing and supporting.

And I wish someone would have ask Steele why he is making such a point about Obama avoiding squawking about his Blackness when Steele HIMSELF has has made a very handsome living COMPLAINING about Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc. doing that very thing.

But I am especially bothered by Steele's mischaracterization of the church Obama attends. I have kin and friends who are members of Trinity and have visited the church on numerous occassions (don't recall seeing Obama there though I wasn't really looking for him). And although the church advocates a very pro-Black family/people ethos, Trinity is NOT the Christian equivalent of the Nation of Islam, espousing some resentment of and seperation from White foks.

Much of what goes down at Trinity can be witnessed at almost ANY Black church ANY Sunday of the year.

And Hell: Trinity would NOT have gotten the MILLIONS of dollars it has gotten from the WHITE Chicago Mayor Richard Daley if Rev. Trotter and his peeps weren't willing to play ball with whitey.

I attended a banquet where the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, the pastor "emeritus" Of Trinity was the guest speaker, and listening to him, I felt like Malcolm X had been reincarnated. Obama has now distanced himself from him, starting with how he stiffed Wright by rescinding the invitation to give the invocation when Obama made the announcement that he was running for president on the steps of the capitol building in Springfield. IL.

As for Shelby Steele, as long as he isn't instructing black folks to not vote for Obama, he is simply a harmless egg head, plying his trade. This presidential race inspires all kind of speculating. On the first Tuesday in Novemer in the year of 2008, all that matters is what lever a person decides to pull.
