After reading reviews of Sister Souljah's book Midnight on amazon it struck me as a love/hate affair. There were at the time 20- 5 star reviews and 19 combined 1&2 star reviews. Many seemed to feel that they were duped into thinking it was a sequel to The Coldest Winter Ever instead of a prequel and that is why they bought. Some are all but saying bait and switch.

I have not followed the build up to this books release, was it pushed as a sequel or did fans after a 10 year wait make assumptions?

Who knows? I'm still snickering over how a photo of sista Soljah reveals the way she has aged into a plump middle-aged woman, double chins and all. She's probably a soccer mom, now, more interested in stirring up brownies instead of stirring up blacks. |

Well she must be doing something right. Last time I checked, "Midnight" was #7 on The New York Times bestseller list.
Has anyone read "Midnight"? I was not a fan of "The Coldest Winter Ever." To me it was so-so with average writing. Plus the genre just wasn't the type of stuff I read anyway.
Didn't know "Midnight" was a prequel though. |

(From the product description it appears that they should have known the difference--
If they bought it off the Internet without reading the description below or an excerpt I can see how they made that mistake although it's on them.
I never would buy a book off the internet. I have to be able to thumb through it and tell if I want to read it--

After reading Chris's above post I can see how some could have been mislead. In the discription, the words "anticipated follow-up" might have been perceived as a sequel. We don't know if the words were choosen for that purpose but hey ....... |

Chris..it was marketed as a sequel. They use "follow-up" but it also says sequel. THAT'S what those of us who buy books look at. So market the dam thing correctly.

They use "follow-up" but it also says sequel
(I don't see that. I see they used "follow-up" and people READ "sequel". Gotcha.
When I read that the main character is a male I'd have known that this was a different book, since The Coldest Winter Ever was definitely female oriented.
You might feel took but you wasn't took.

I think the problem comes in this phrase:
highly anticipated follow-up to her million-selling masterpiece
That gives a strong signal of a sequel to the last book and not just another book from the same author. The fact that it involves a character from the other book also signals sequel. The reference to Midnight does not tell if it is a pre or post timeframe to The Coldest Winter Ever. If the character is 14 the phrase young man is a stretch and allows one to think of an older person as the character. They later use the term "man" to describe Midnight.
I think they carefully crafted this to allow the reader to assume this was a sequeul without using the word. Of course that allows the greatest amount of quick sales.

It's been nine long years since the release of Sister Souljah's groundbreaking and gritty novel The Coldest Winter Ever. A bestseller, the book has more than one million copies in print and I don't know about you, but I haven't come across too many people who haven't read it.
I remember being put on to the book at the hair salon years ago. Everyone talked about Winter Santiaga and her never-ending quest to be the baddest broad, no matter the consequences.
I have a good feeling everyone will be talking about the second installment too.According to Publishers Weekly, the sequel is entitled Midnight and will drop in October. The book follows Midnight the fine, but somewhat mysterious character from The Coldest Winter Ever. Sister Souljah conducted extensive research for the sequel, including travel to other countries. Atria, the book's publisher, says Midnight will deliver and fans will not be disappointed.
Might be good to break out your copy of The Coldest Winter Ever and reacquaint yourself with the novel that many people consider to have sparked the new face of the urban/street lit genre.

I am in total agreement with Genie. Midnight is marketed as a sequel to CWE and there is no relationship between the two. I noticed how the hero did not meet one African American girl or woman who had any kind of morals, talents, values, or education. They were all dysfunctional, promiscuous, violent and ignorant. There isn’t even any humor in the book. This is the kind of book you sell in a religious book store that is attached to a temple or a mosque. Sister Souljah deserves the reader backlash she is sure to get for allowing the book to be misrepresented this way. I acknowledge that she wanted to get a message across, but her dishonesty makes the message suspect.
