Do you ever buy books simply to support an author? (I have. The books I bought were either unfinished, never been cracked open, or sold for gas money. Occasionally, I even liked a few.) The books might not be in a genre you would normally not read or you might worry it's subpar for whatever reason. Still you buy it to support the author. If so, why did you feel you needed to support the author?

Is the "support me" pitch effective for authors?

Yes, I have bought books just to support an author who is an acquaintance. But - when I can avoid doing this, I do. In the past, I have had people who bought my books to support me, which is why I alway priced my books very low. I didn't want to take advtange of these well-wishers.

Hello All,

I don't buy books to support an author. I use to do that and then I stopped. I realize that my name was not St. Vincent dePaul. Besides, I don't have the room to store the books I have.

I don't buy books solely to support authors because I consider it a waste of money ($ spent on a book I'm not interested in). Now that may change if a good friend friend of mine wrote a book that I had no interest in, or if a charity I believed stood to benefit from sales proceeds of a book I had no interest in.

Yes I do. Especially if the author is new and is from my city, simply because I know how hard you have to work sometimes, to get people to crack a new author's book, so I gladly give other new author's my support. It makes it even hard when people who are supposedly well read turn up their noses at what you work hard to turn out, pour your heart and soul into simply because it doesn't fit into their snobby mold. I'm happy to say that I will and have read all kinds of books. My criteria? That it's a good read.

I'm happy to report that at my booksignings, I have had a ton of people come up and look at my book and say they are going to buy my book, just because they like me (my personality) and want to support me. I'm so thankful that there are still many people out there who do this despite the harsh economy we live in!

THANK YOU!

Okay, Thumper. I had to go look up SVdP. You are a mess, lol.

I generally will buy books to support an author. This weekend I attended a very nice book fair in Brooklyn (The Brooklyn Book Festival). I purchased a few books. I brought one from Brownstone Books (a book by Wynton Marsalis), a local Black owned bookstore, and I purchased a book of poetry from a UK based publisher.

On Friday I went to a Faith Evans signing at Hue-man. I did not buy Faiths' book (I have two copies at home). But I brought a Chai Tea and the first issue of SLR magazine.

I can't recall the last time I set foot in a Black owned book store and did not buy something -- usually something I actually want if not for me for someone else.

That said... there was this cat roaming around the Brooklyn Bookfestival with a bag of DVDs of a movie he said he made and starred in. He approached me an a couple of other guys standing in a circle engaged in conversation. He used that approach where he hands you the product. If you say no he says please take it.

He gives each of us a DVD and goes on to describe how he did everything to produce the movie. We all said, "no we are not interested".

Homeboy then goes on to say, "what y'all can't support a struggling artist". I almost blew a gasket. I said "man get out of here with that, I've been out here all day supporting artists."

So no, I don't support everyone -- I can't. If it is a single author or bookstore I do. If there are scores of authors at a fair I pick and choose.
