They're asking to see my full manuscript and I wondered if they're on the up and up. They're not listed in Preditors and Editors.

Thanks.

Greetings,

No, I have not dealt with them. But, I had the opportunity to conduct an online interview with the publisher/author, Dwan Abrams. She is also a member of Black Authors Showcase and Book Marketing Network.

I would contact her to find out all of the details.

Peace
Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

Dang! Can somebody come up with a publisher name that isn't some word spelled backwards?

Never heard of 'em but that really doesn't mean much. They could be legit or they could be new crooks not yet on Preditors and Editors. You should ask them what other books they've published. And if they decide they want to publish your work, have a lawyer look over the contract before you sign anything. If you join the Author's Guild (http://www.authorsguild.org/), they will look over publishing contracts as part of your membership at no extra cost to you.

Note to self: Nix from list of possible names for publishing company..."Rion", "Ahseed", and "Amam"...

It's hard out here for a publisher, Emanuel, lol!

One thing Emanuel, the author's guild only accepts your application for membership if you have already been published by a traditional publisher.

I find a few things troublesome about this startup press. First, as far as I can tell, all of their books were written by the publisher. Second, their only "distribution" is through Ingram and B&T, which are really wholesalers, not distributors. That screams that they operate on a POD-only business model - they don't do printruns. It's next to impossible getting POD-only books onto bookstore shelves en masse. Most likely, any books they publish will only be available for online purchase.

It also appears that all promotion is left up to the author. Granted, small presses don't have the marketing and promotion budget of conglomerates. And even at a major house, the big-name authors receive the bulk of the marketing and promotion budget, while lesser-known authors must do much of their own promotion to get their names out there. But still, a legit small press should allocate SOME funds to promote their authors' books.

They also appear to have a vanity "self-publishing" operation going on - a clear conflict of interests. Why would this publisher accept your book for publication, front all publishing expenses, and assume all financial risks - in other words, operate as a legit press does - when they could refer you to their self-pubbing arm and have you, the author, pay THEM to publish your book?

In all fairness, many of today's legit and thriving small presses began as self-pubbers who later branched out and pubbed other authors; thereby making the transition from self-pubber to small press. But after perusing Nevaeh's site, it seems they've still a number of kinks to work out in order to make a smooth transition from self-pubbing operation to legit small press. You worked hard on your novel, I'm sure. Why would you want to be their guinea pig?

Most startup presses go under their first year in business. You could always check back with them a year from now to see what they've accomplished and what improvements they've made. Meanwhile, keep looking. Best of luck to you!
