Stop by my blog when you get a chance and check out my post on whether or not white men can jump. I'm sort of seeking absolution, but do I deserve it? Let me hear from you!

Terra Little,

I really related to your "White Men Can't Jump" story. It was quite touching.

My only problem is the title of it.

Why would you be seeking to find him and apologize to him--yet you used such a demeaning (and to a white man) "castrating" title for something that is a totally different story than what I expected or what the title emplies?

If a white man who had hopes of finding me so that he could apologize to me wrote an article titled "Black Women Can't Grow Hair"---and thought it was cute, topical and appropriate for making an overature towards me---I would be very insulted and would never respond.

Kola

Hi Kola,

Thanks for checking out the post and responding.

I wasn't really thinking along the lines of castrating white men when I titled the post. I was making vague reference to the movie "White Men Can't Jump" and how the title was vaguely misleading, in that it turned out that the white man in question was actually part of a basketball hustle partnership with a black guy. So the title was initially misleading...at least to me, anyway. And my question: "Can white men jump?" was moreso related to this particular guy and the questions: Was he interested in me and I missed it because he didn't "jump" in a timely fashion? Was he simply shy or was I sort of thick-headed? This guy and I would often sit around campus pondering the state of race relations and why the campus was so racially polarized, so the title is sort of reminiscent of that time and place. I guess you just had to be there, but I see what you're saying. I'll have to take a look at the title for PC-ness.

Anywho, I don't think the comparison, "Can Black Women Grow Hair?" is exactly the same thing in this instance. I guess it would be sort of similar if the guy was seeking you out to apologize because he had previously called you bald-headed or something, or had snatched your wig off at some point and now felt bad about it (not that you wear wigs, just giving an example). Otherwise, the title of his post would/should be directly related to whatever it is he's wanting to apologize for.

"Can White Men Jump?" is a bit of a play on words, directly related to my query as to whether or not white men sometimes tiptoe into approaching black women for whatever reason(s). As I said, I'm no expert, which is why I posed the question in the post. Also, the title, as my sense of humor tends to be, is a little bit of a slap upside the head, meant to tickle your curiosity, so....hah, made you look!

Again, thanks for checking it out and sharing your thoughts.

Hello Little Terra and Welcome

You excuses or rationalizations be what they may, are just that. The issue/concerns Kola raised with the title is still king. Regardless of what you may have intended it to be, it is what it is. Her response to you.... her example was not meant as an analogy it was merely an example....an insight into what the mind might do in a similar situation.

I would encourage you to listen and not be to quick to say "yeah but". Yeah...you made us look......BUTT!

Well, I guess it really doesn't matter if you did or not.

Based on Ms. Boof's post, I did look at the title and change it to a question, rather than a statement, since that's the spirit in which it was meant.

Thank you, too, for checking out the post.

Hi Terra,

You can't take Carey seriously.

He's a good guy and once you get to know
him, you'll adore him.

He didn't mean you any harm, sister. :-)

As you get to know him, you'll see how
he is.

(Very handsome sweet old-school older
gentleman)

Think of your cop as "mellowed," better
read and made sophisticated by life.

As for the subject...

I have been in your same exact position several times and guess what? I did the same thing you did--each time.

I'll write more about it tomorrow or Sunday, but I've clothes to fold from the dryer right now.

Nope.....didn't....wouldn't do that. Even if we had broke bread together I would never call someone a BUTT. I hope I have other ways to get my point across. Don't get me wrong....I can get down with the best of them when it comes to swimming in the gutter bowl of foul words. I can talk about the "pink part of my ***####" so no, I wasn't calling you out of your name although I do have a penchant for sticking my own nicknames on people.....but it's done out of love.

Okay Kola......we get it.....I am old, okay :-).
Dang, I feel like you did sitting around all those size 2 women with all their $5,000 do's on. Come on, you knows dem sista's be paying for that look. Just tonight, a women was telling me about this process that involves a stocking cap type do rag, that is tightly pulled down on the head and the "hair" is then woven or glued to that. DAMN....what ever happened to the natural look or the old press & curl? Don't Kola, Don't remind me of how old I am and that a gallon of gas and a pack of cigarettes could both be purchased for under a dollar, I don't need that reminder. Kola....we get it *lol*.

I am trying to get with that image of you washing and folding clothes? Next you'll be telling us that you cook? Please...spare us :-).

Of course I am kidding but check this out. I was dating a women and we were hooked up.....like bread & butter. She would invite her family to MY house and all that good s**t women do when they think they have a man in the fold. Anyway, one day out of the blue she said, "baby, if I didn't cook so well would you still be with me?"....I turned and looked at her with endearing eyes and said, "now that don't make no sense, a black women that does not cook is like a car without tires, where are we going to go".....she looked surprised......I was just as surprised at the question......she said, "really"....I said "REALLY".

Okay...I believe I mentioned being a little dense about abstract things (scratching my head). What are we talking about now? The cooking thing...the symbolism is lost on me. Please elaborate. LOL.

Yes, I was simply talking about black women and their ability or need to cook. No symbolism...just raw.

Do you have permission to be up this late?

Stick around ....live a little......Little.....you might learn a little something.....Little.

Too bad you can't buy a bottle of youth, Mr. Carey. I think dementia is setting in... But I'll fight an old man, 'cause I clearly don't have any home-training, as you so eloquently pointed out. Sometimes old folks need to know when to give it over to fresh meat and sit it down...

Troy has pictures of me from the event
and I wasn't dressed up.

The ones where I have on a short skirt
and a green top....

I had just come from swimming and wasn't
wearing a lot of makeup.

I'll be more dressed up for the AALBC party
tonight.

I'm going to go ahead and admit you were right, I tend to start talking crazy when I'm sleepy. Hence, last night/this morning. Shoulda took my butt to bed when I had the chance. LOL. Lord knows ain't nothing I can do with no grown man, even with one hand tied behind his back. Hope you're having a good day thus far and not holding my colicky episode from last night/this morning against me. Thanks for breaking me in on the boards. But you know you were wrong for that fry machine crack...

The only thing that bother me was I allowed myself to stay up long pass my bedtime. Oh yeah....wisdom tells me not to play with my sleep. Have you ever noticed the people that say that they only need a little sleep....huh....frequently they are fooling themselve because if you put them in a lineup it wouldn't take but a minute to pick dey tired ass straight up out of the line. Their skin be all dry lookin' and they just look empty. Anyway...no babe...you koo. I did have to break yo smart ass off a little something. But welcome....now... go sit down and take off that greasy uniform. Don't no man want to be huggin' on no french fries. BTW, what are you reading....you can't be up in here just promoting your thang....what ya bring to the table? If you ain't bring nothing sit your behind down and learn a little something.....Little {:-).

Little, yes I could recommend a few....but listen....if I asked you to recommend a few good CD's I could assume you would look in your stax .....your mind and come up with something that you like.....right?.....without knowing me .....or knowing what I like and why I like it.....your suggestion would probably be something suited for you.....we can assume that,right?.......that's a correct assumtion based on the information.....right....okay. So instead of me asking you all those questions like, what genre....what authors....what style...etc...I'm going to give it to you straight...and why I like them.

Here we go: I'm old school and I don't read "Blue Panties" or any type of book inwhich the subject matter is centered around someones sexual exploits....done.

Although I'm not a writer, in my reading I need good.....tight sentence structure (who would have thought it).....I write like I talk and therefore I can adjust along the way AND in general conversation a person can be interupted and asked a question. However when one is reading a book....those luxuries are gone....tangling modifiers (common in poor writing)can leave me wanting. I need to be taken on a journey....the author should take me some place without using to many metaphors, I don't know anything about your reading background...however when I mention metaphoric writing, certain writers pop in the mind of many....of course one would say Terry McMIllan. It has been my experience and therefore my opinion that certain genre give way to "forgiveness" of some of the writing today. This is debatable but some of the new "street" or "crime" fiction comes to mind. Having said that, I'd be remiss if I didn't say I've enjoyed some Hip-Hop Noir. In fact I will recommend one ....The Dying Ground by Nichelle D. Tramble.

As you may well know, few things are "new" in life. There are new writers but the stories are hard to separate. I say that because there is enough reading to last you a few years in Old School and barely new writings. I mean writers like Tananarive Due....Bernice McFadden...Walter Mosely..Barbara Neely....J. California Cooper...Richard Wright....Langston Huges...Penny Mickelbury, the list goes on and on. All the writers I've listed above have excellent reads. I am not a Baldwin fan although many just love his works. Other "good" writers I don't read......."good" could be judged by "money". Some authors sell many books ....but....I don't read E. Lynn Harris....I don't read, Kimberly Lawson Roby....I've read ZANE, I don't "read" ZANE.

Okay...Caution...if you do start your road to reading on a path of quality writers....the road will narrow as you continue on your journey. The debate on this issue....the debate of this issue is fueled by "money"...."talent"..."publishers"...and a changing of cultures....just to name a few factors in .....good vs GOOD.

So my dear, what's your flavor, do you like a suspenseful read that you can snuggle with late at night?.....Murder?.....Family Drama?....Sista Girl Stole My Man?....Supernatural like Bram Stokerish?....A series like Mouse & Easy.....King Tremain and his boy?.....female protagonists?(Carole Ann Gibson) (Blanche)....how about a low down father that you would just like to sqeeze to death.....huh. Be careful what you ask for....everything good to you ain't good for you!

Hi Carey,

It just so happens that Due and McFadden are two of my favorite writers. I've read "My Soul to Keep" at least five times and "The Living Blood" at least twice. Just about all of McFadden's books I've read, though I've not had a chance to see what's what with her Geneva Holliday works. J.C. Cooper's "Some People, Some Other Place" (I think that's the name of it) was really good, as well. Believe it or not, I just read my first Easy Rawlins novel a few months back, but I plan to backtrack and work my way up to where I started and then continue from there. I did enjoy Mosley's "Killing Johnnie Frye" though.

Let's see...others... Nora Roberts and LaVyrle Spencer, when I was heavy into romance some years back...Patricia Cornwell, anything Kay Scarpetta, I have all of them...Barbara Delinsky, I have most, if not all of her stuff, love it, she's great for relationship, family dynamics stuff...Bebe Moore Campbell, God rest her soul...some of Anita Shreve's stuff...Joy Fielding...Alice Walker...V.C. Andrews, when I was younger and before she died and the ghost writer took over...and of course, many of the classics - Langston, Baldwin, Hurston...and on and on...and I just recently discovered Nella Larson. This list is by no means exhaustive, believe me.

Speaking of metaphorical writing styles...I have a few of Baldwin's titles and I do enjoy his style. Same with Toni Morrison. When I'm in the right frame of mind, writing styles such as Morrison's and Baldwin's speak to my soul in a lyrical, poetic way. I get a tingle down my spine and wonder, "How do they find the words? Where do they find the words?" Frame of mind is important though, because without it the metaphors can go right over your head and your not getting what you should be getting from the words.

When it comes to my reading tastes, I tend to lean toward books with meat to them; issues that characters struggle with, with realistic outcomes, etc. Then again, my tastes run hot and cold and what I'm reading depends on my mood. I don't, however, gravitate toward baby mama, shoot 'em up, bang-bang type stuff. I need something that's going to trip up my thought process and give me something to chew on long after I'm done reading, most of the time, anyway.

I'm always open to suggestions though, because I LOVE to read. I think, if my house caught on fire (knock on wood) I'd be trying to save as many of the hundreds of books I've accumulated over the years as I could. Probably unconsciously, because I know it sounds crazy, but there's just something about a book...

So if you were to ask for suggestions where music is concerned, I would indeed probably offer some based on what I like. But, then again, my tastes there are eclectic, too, so I would try to suggest a variety for your listening pleasure. Perhaps, if I'm recommending something you've not previously explored, you might encounter something you wish to explore further.

If you suggested a book and I didn't like it, I'd tell you I didn't like it and then ask for another suggestion. I'll try it...LOL. I don't mind learning about something I didn't know before.

But then I cry every time I watch Forrest Gump, so go figure...I told you I was a little squirrely, didn't I?

The beauty, wonder and blind fence of the internet. The aspiring writer.....how could I for one minute have thought you were a rookie reader.

Yes, you were correct, Some People, Some Other Place....I even love the book cover....An old desoto, parked on a lonely side road, inches away from a dark forest....up ahead, a single mailbox standing beside a street sign that says, dream..... J. California Cooper...she is missed.

I feel you.....deep or introspective books are nice....then again, so is the Green Mile and The Wiz.

I think it's safe to say we are never "always".

However, I think it's also safe to say that whenever one does becomes complacent or think their way is the only way, they could become a boring mess.

Thank you for reminding me that the Internet only gives us a small glimpse....a glance of the person behind the "screen".

On a lighter side...sounds like you don't need to be turned on to a good read......sounds like you need a good reference for a job :-). Sounds like you need more money so you can buy more books.

Music: Yeah, I'm open...from Tupac to Etta James....if I like it ...I like it.

Well McLittle, seems like we are crowding the board with neighbor like chatter so....to bed to bed said sleepy head.
