It could be negative (higher prices, an end to the hardback. Fewer books printed)

It could be positive (books will be cheaper probably than almost any other form of entertainment)

What do you think, Afrofuturologists?

How shall we get in front of the curve?

The rising cost of fuel affects just about anything that is transported using vehicles when the recipient (bookstores) pays for shipping and fuel costs. That cost will be passed on to consumers.

E-books could grow if consumers start to feel the pinch from buying printed books. More consumers may turn to online retailers that offer deeper discounts and free shipping rather than driving to the bookstore (more fuel costs) buying higher priced books and driving home. You could also get more book buyers turning to public libraries instead of buying.

Of course authors and publishers will be negatively affected if there is a downturn in book sales. More authors will have to hustle to sell books. Consumers will think twice about using gas to attend book events too.

How do we get in front of the curve? That's a tough one.

I think it means publishers do away with printing books in hardcover for one thing. And I agree with Emanuel that we could see fewer people attending book signing events by individual authors. Maybe authors will band together and have more multi-author events--a trend that has been growing in recent years anyway.

Books will never go away. They outlived the depression era of the 1920's and 30's and they will survive this crisis as well in one form or another.

(How about the rising costs of computer equipment, maintenance and electricity?)
