Florida to Host the Historic Black Writers Reunion & Conference
By Dee H. Johnson

The acclaimed touring Black Writers Reunion & Conference (BWRC) visits Florida for the first time this summer for three days of educational and social activities designed for learning and inspiration. The 2008 meeting offers its traditional selection of in-depth workshops on the craft of creative writing for novice to advanced writers of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry, but this year the program is expanded to cover a broader scope of writing interests with sessions on travel, proposal, technical and new media writing, copywriting, copyediting, and public speaking.

Sponsored by the Dallas, Texas-based National Black Writers Foundation, the theme for the conference is "From Dreams to Reality." BWRC will take place June 19-21, 2008 at Sheraton Riverwalk Hotel, 200 N. Ashley Drive in Tampa. Other events include a book fair (5:30-7:30 p.m.) and a gospel stage play ("Confessions of a Preacher's Wife" by Mikasenoja) on Friday (7:30 p.m.), as well as a poetry slam on Saturday (8:30 p.m.) The book fair and poetry slam will be held at the hotel. The play will be presented at Blake High School Performing Arts Magnet Theatre. All events are open to the public.

Founded in 2000, the main objective for BWRC is to demystify the craft and business of writing both creatively and professionally by providing a wide of range of highly informative sessions that cover the spectrum of the craft.

For tickets to the poetry slam or the play, visit www.blackwriters.org/events.html. Contact mikasenoja@aol.com regarding the play and shanilasana@yahoo.com regarding the poetry slam.

To register or to learn more about the conference, send an email to Tia Ross, Director, at conference@blackwriters.org or visit the website at www.blackwriters.org.
