The changes at amazon with how they handle POD books may be a hidden blessing for POD books in general. Lightning Source has made a deal with the people that created the Expresso book machine that can create POD books in a few minutes at a site that readers frequent instead of at a remote production center.

There are many new technolgies that would allow book production at the retail level and others will explore this avenue. This is a link that talks about the deal:
