Please check out my interview with writer Kim McLarin over at LiteraryMama. In it, she discusses the themes in her most recent novel, Jump at the Sun (about a successful black woman who contemplates abandoning her children) as well as why she writes, how being a black, female writer informs how she sees the world, and how a writer can get lost in the blogosphere. (Ahem.) Hopefully, my review of Jump at the Sun will be posted soon as well. But you can go ahead and buy a copy. Or three.

Interview is here:

A very interesting piece, both from the standpoint of showcasing an articulate black author and the excellent interviewer who asks her just the right question to invoke thoughtful answers. Good job, FT. Thanks for posting this.

I appreciate the taboos Ms. McLarin dares to explore in regard to the sacrosanct institution of motherhood which is, indeed, fraught with the potential for guilt and dismay and failure. The demands of parenthood too often require a woman to be selfless when the reality is, is that even with attentive parenting, some offspring go astray simply because - they are who they are.

I also relate to Kim McLarin when it comes to the writing impulse. Writers write. Self expression is oxygen for our souls.

The extraordinary Kim McLarin is an embodiment of Will Shakespeare's "this above all, to thine ownself be true" caveat. Not a bad philosophy to live by. I know.

Thanks, Cynique. It was a great experience for me to interview her. Even though it was by email, and not face-to-face, I learned a lot based on the couple of questions of mine she decided to ignore outright. ;-p

I think those are the best experiences--the ones that make us better writers or interviewers or whatever.

And an "amen" to what you said about motherhood and being true to ourselves.

Nope. Haven't had much time for reading these days except for the books I'm assigned to review.
