Urban_Scribe,

I couldn't access the audio for some reason. However, I've heard a few current and former Urban Books authors have had problems getting their royalties paid. I've heard of similar problems with Genesis Press, Triple Crown, and Black Pearl. Can any black-owned publisher be trusted these days?

Troy,

It's shocking that Susan Taylor is being published by Urban Books. Even though they now have the Urban Christian imprint, I still think of them as catering more towards the street lit and you-go-girl crowd. Taylor's book has the same title of one of my favorite bell hooks books. I hope there is not title confusion.

Urban_scribe What 'da "F" is going on?! This is really unfortunate. I've met Jihad a number of times and he has been a customer http://www.aalbc.com/authors/jihaduhuru.htm and Carl has been a client too. I view them both as gentlemen. I really do hope they work out their disagreement.

Emanuel, I praised Carl because the publication of Susan Taylor book demonstrates a willingness and ablility for an "urban" publishing house to do something the major publishing houses would not do.

I feel it is note worthy because it is an important step.

I've heard rumors about Urban Books as well.

The complaints I hear are not unique to Urban Books. One major problem is that authors, as Jihad (or the person purporting to be Jihad) indicated; authors sign unfavorable contracts. They are poorly represented or choose not to take the advice of their agent/attorney. I also know many authors have unrealistic expectattions...

Now if Carl is flat out lying, as accused, that is unacceptable and I really do hope it is not true. Time will tell.

Yeah, Troy, that broke my heart too. I've never met Jihad, so I can't comment on his character. I've met Carl, and he struck me as an affable guy. But Jihad sounds too serious, too angry to be dismissed as a liar or a hater.

Also, I wanted writers on this forum to listen to what Jihad was saying, not the threats he made toward Carl and the "I got bail money" part, but in between all that he touched on how distribution, sales and royalties works in book publishing, and his information is accurate. I think it will open a lot of hopeful writers' and self-pubbers' eyes. If Carl is doing/has done what Jihad accuses him of, though I like Carl, Jihad's got a legit beef.

As for STaylor's book being published by UB, I agree that's a great step for a predominately UF publishing company. Perhaps UB should start a separate imprint. One thing's for sure, ST doesn't have to worry about being screwed out of distribution, sales, and royalties. If Jihad's accusations are true, I know Carl knows better than to pull that shite with Susan Taylor.

Urban_scribe, honestly I'm not convinced that that was the Jihad I know. I really does not sound like him. I'm looking into it and will let you know.

Ominous music, please...

Will our two acrimonious adversaries make peace by saying "Can't we all get along?"

Or will the plot thicken and involve others?

TUNE IN TOMORROW FOR ANOTHER EPISODE OF....
AS THE AA LITERARY WORLD TURNS....

After hearing and reading about a few issues going on with some of the urban/hip hop publishers over money, release dates, contracts etc. with their authors, I wonder if the problem is math.

Rumors of checks not clearing, funny accounting etc. and rantings from authors of lavish lifestyles of the folks running these companies begs a question. Reinvestment in the business or lack thereof could be an issue. An enterprise generates X amount of revenue and that has to offset all expenses from editing to distribution. If a substantial sum is diverted for lifestyle support, fill in the blank. This is just a theory, mind you, but I've been in the business world a long time.

A book is like any other product once it is bound and printed. The price that it is sold for on the publishers side is the second markup. The first markup beyond raw materials is from printer to publisher, then publisher to distributor. Those prices are a far cry from the final sales price to consumer. That small margin has to total with enough unit sales to pay an individual author if they earn out their advance. If a publisher if cranking out a lot of titles, the money may be coming in on the aggregate volume, but not necessarily the individual titles. The bottom line is the publisher may profit overall, but the individual author may be watching the mailbox.

This is just a theory.

Hen81, that is not a theory but logic.

The most importnat line for an individual author is "...the publisher may profit overall, but the individual author may be watching the mailbox."

True, because all of the Urban Lit best sellers are written by thugs and gangstas.

Jackie please bite your tongue.

Though it does sound like a good Boondocks episode. We already got a suitable video (Read a Book!) for the sound track...
