What do you recommend for what types of readers? What book do you hope will be in your holiday stocking? Have you been naughty or nice? ;-)

(P.S.: Troy, is there a way to use the on-line "wish list" feature on Amazon in a way that links to aalbc?)

A Christmas wish list-Great idea.

For the past year, I have made it a point of only reading non-American writers.

I am anxious to read Edwidge Danticott's newest, I think it is called, "Brother." or something like that. Any other foreign born authors anyone would recommend??

Greetings,

I will recommend that you figure what type of books that you want to purchase and then purchase them one step at a time or develop of list of books that you want to purchase for the holidays.

Thanks for asking.

Cordially,
Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

Robynmarie, are you talking about "Brother, I'm Dying"? That looks fascinating. Several times I have picked it up in the bookstore, but never carried it to the cash register. Next time I am in a memoir mood, I'll have to get it.

Good, Troy. That would be a good feature, I think.

Afrika, do you have any titles you are looking forward to? Will you be giving books for the holidays? This is mainly a "sharing" thread, in response to a request by Chris that we get in a literary holiday spirit. So share away! LOL

Greetings Yvette,

Did you know that December is a month filled with multicultural holiday celebrations? Well, if you did not, know you know. Personally, I do not have any books that reflect books for the holidays.

However, if you are an author of a multicultural holiday book and you want me to read it, please email me directly at Aashawarrior@aol.com and please do not reply back to the thread because I do not check it out often. Anyway, below are a list of books or links that reflect multicultural holiday celbrations.

They are as follows

Afrika, I think we crossed wires--I meant this to be sharing about book-buying for the holidays, not about the holidays. But thanks for the links--In my previous life as a teacher I collected multicultural children's books about different holidays around the world.

As for me, I have given up on giving books as gifts except for "coffee table"-like books. But I still like the idea of allowing folks to buy books they pick out themselves, on my dime. That's why I like book gift cards and paying for stuff on people's "wish lists" that they create themselves.

As for me, I hope Santa indulges me in my latest reading theme. See, frequently I get into a mood where I read several books on the same general topic. A while back, for example, it was historical fiction and fictionalized history. Now my thing is language. Right now I am reading John McWHorter's "The Power of Babel: A Natural History of Language." I am really enjoying it--No, I am not a fan of much of his politics, but here he is writing in his area of academic training (linguistics) and he is a very good populizer of academic research.

Along those lines I hope over the next few months to read Steven Pinker--either "The Stuff of Thought" or "The Language Instinct," and Christine Kennealy's "The First Word." Also, because I LOVED "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" I think I might try Kitty Burns Florey's "Sister Bernadette's Barking Dog: The Quirky History and Lost Art of Diagramming Sentences." I also would like to find a good, readable book about the Gullah dialect.

Even though there are two authors in my family, I think giving books as Christmas gifts at my house might get you shot. Even the gift cards might end up being used to buy CDs, video games, or cafe lattes. Let's face it: this is the electronic age and everyone wants flatscreens, Playstations, digital cameras, portable CD players, etc. Unless someone has a really specific love of certain books (my kid likes Captain Underpants for instance) they wouldn't be appreciated as holiday gifts. I get a lot of review copies myself, so receiving books as a gift would probably be a waste of someone's money. However, a copy of the official Scrabble player's dictionary would be a most welcome gift.

Regarding that book on diagramming, it sounds very interesting. I used to diagram sentences in the 5th and 6th grades. It helped me so much. I haven't read "Eats, Shoot, and Leaves" yet but I keep a copy of "The Elements of Style" by my desk.

Greetings Emanuel,

I will have to disagree with your point of view, but everyone has a right for free speech. I will have to differ from your perspective, I will take books as gifts before anything else, it is with books that you are able to expand your intellect. That is part of the problem today that no one wants to read or buy a book or give as a gift to our people.

Again, if you or anyone else a question(s), please do not reply back to this thread, please send them to my inbox which is Aashawarrior@aol.com

Thanks

Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

Yvettep you have a very eclectic reading taste.

How about Joe Eszterhas' memoir, "Hollywood Animal"?

I'm getting Blond Faith by Walter Mosley for my son and Negro Poets and Their Poems for my Dad. He remembers reading this when he was in school and has asked for it [along with some fresh black walnuts - lol].

For me - nothing specific. Actually I'm cleaning books out of my house now and don't need any more. What I really need is a new floor to ceiling bookcase!

"Them" Nathan McCall's excursion into the field of fiction would be a book I wouldn't mind receiving. The author first burst onto the scene with "Makes Me Wanna Hollar", a memoir about his ascendency from the ghetto to the newsroom.
"Them" deals with white people moving into the affluent black neighborhoods of Atlanta, creating awkward but amusing situations. It's getting mixed reviews so I'd rather receive it as a gift than buy it.
