2007 National Book Award Winners Announced
The winners of the 2007 National Book Awards were announced tonight, November 14, at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. The annual awards are given by the National Book Foundation to recognize achievements in four categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Young People's Literature. The night's ceremonies included the presentation of the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters to essayist Joan Didion and the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community to Terry Gross, host and executive producer of National Public Radio's Fresh Air.
This year's winners are:
Fiction
Denis Johnson, Tree of Smoke (FSG)
Nonfiction
Tim Weiner, Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA (Doubleday)
Poetry
Robert Hass, Time and Materials (Ecco/HarperCollins)
Young People's Literature
Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Little, Brown) -- The #1 Fall 2007 Book Sense Children's Pick

I read two of the finalists in the nonfiction category, "Brother, I'm Dying" by Edwidge Danticat and "Ralph Ellison: A Biography" by Arnold Rampersad.
In addition, the chair of the nonfiction voting panel was David Shields, author of "Black Planet: Facing Race During an N.B.A. Season," and the judges included NYU law professor Annette Gordon-Reed, author of "Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings: An American Controversy."
I liked the Danticat memoir although it's a very heartbreaking story.
One of the most astute reviews of the Rampersad book is this one by Mark Greif in the London Review of Books. He's an American in his early 30s who's also read the Lawrence Jackson book.

The Hurston/Wright Legacy Awards were also announced a few weeks ago. I've read three. I suspect Emanuel's read more.
