When I was learning to play poker the books I read say that the aim of the game is not to win the most hands, but to win the most money.

A look at the career of Joe Eszterhas might lead one to believe that the aim of being a writer is not to get the most books published or scripts filmed but to make the most money, to wit:

None of Eszterhas's screenplays were produced from 1997 to 2006; his latest project, Children of Glory, was released in 2006 (it was also entered by invitation in the official section of 2007 Berlin Film Festival). He currently has an estimated twenty-five unproduced screenplays (that he sold to studios or production companies but were never made into films), which have so far earned him a combined total of over thirty million dollars

From Wikipedia.

Is he playin' THE GAME like it ought to be played?

Obviously he's more mercenary than aesthetic.
