I saw Cornel West on Tavis Smiley last night.
Man that guy is always great. He was talking about his new CD and about the NAACP burying the N Word.
In short he said it was a meaningless though well meaning gesture. He said Martin Luther King could come in and say Nigga all he wanted. Would you say he didn't love black people?
If you can catch it, do so. |

He did comment that he was aware of all the negative and hurtful history and things attached to it but pointed out that "burying" a word was a meaningless gesture and then brought out that the NAACP has it's own problems with misogyny and black love ("Colored People"?) and that they have been missing in action many times when real issues arise with its own members and those of its white supporters.

Jeeze, you'd think Cornel West wouldn't stoop to the level of dummies like chrishayden. Guess some folks don't recognize a symbolic gesture used to call attention to a stand taken. What the NAACP did impacts more than a lot of preaching and entreating. It may not change a lot of minds, but it does "dramatize" their crusade to bury the N-word. |
