I just finished a very good memoir titled "If I Am Missing Or Dead" by Janine Latus about a woman, her abusive relationships and her sister's abusive relationships, the latter which ends in death.
I'm looking forward to reading some good fiction now, so I checked out the list of award-winning books of 2006 at Booksamillion.com (http://www.booksamillion.com/ncom/books?id=3891673231852&cat=main) then reserved them at my library online. Up next is:
"On Beauty" by Zadie Smith
"The Echo Maker" by Richard Powers.
"A Dirty Job" by Christopher Moore |

I just finished "The First Lady" by Carl Webber. It was my book club's selection for our upcoming meeting. Carl Webber is very good at what he does and I'd recommend his books to anybody who likes Tyler Perry type drama. Me, I found the book a tad banal. Next up for me, "Casanegra" by Tannarive Due and Blair Underwood. |

I'm enjoying Whispers In The Night [Dark Dreams III]. I’ve found a couple of the stories, while horror, are not paranormal horror. This is just crazy horrible stuff that can and does happen to real people – makes it even scarrier! Of course, there’s some nasty monsters in there too. I’ve enjoyed all 3 of these books. |

I am in the process of reading Just A Season by John T.Wills and The Time is Wright by Orean D.Chatman. Both are novel books by two African-American males.

Emanuel, please let us know how you liked Powers' novel. I am a big fan of his. BTW, I read a review of this book in the NYT, which was written by Coleson Whitehead, which led me to a review of his latest book, "Apex Hides the Hurt." Well, two more books added to my fall reading list! |

Will do Yvette. I received "On Beauty" first so I started that one. I heard "Apex..." is pretty good too.
Cynique, did you read "So You Call Yourself a Man" by Webber? It's the only Carl Webber book I've read but I thought it was great. I heard "The First Lady" wasn't nearly as good.
Chris, what's up with the Spike Lee kick? Do we have another Spike in the making? |

You know, I read the first four chapters of "On Beauty" and just wasn't feeling it. I'm really looking forward to "The Echo Maker" but for now I'm reading "A Dirty Job" until it arrives.
Also, I've been hearing some great things about a book called "What If It Feels Good?" by D.J. McLaurin. I think I'll buy that one through AALBC.com. |

Re-reading Alek's book.... other than that, re-reading Ed Jones book, Thats the problem when books are your work, first you read for enjoyment, then you read because you dont want to sound like a moron when you are interviewing the authors!  |

I had planned to start Tannarive Due's latest but I took advantage of a chance to read "The Quickie" since my friend who checked it out from the library finished it before its due date and passed it along to me. And, boy, do James Patterson and his collaborator Michael Ledwidge know how to knit a crime yarn! The premise of "The Quickie" is so clever and original. For me, it's a real page turner. But "Casanegra" is next for sure. |

Of the three books I started, "A Dirty Job" is the best so far, very entertaining. I couldn't get into "On Beauty" and "The Echo Maker" is a task to read. |

I just started reading "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz. This is a long-awaited read for me. I was a huge fan of Junot's short fiction since he started getting published in Story Magazine nearly a dozen years ago.
I just won a copy of "The Water Cure" by Percival Everett from Felicia Pride's TheBackList.com, and want to read her own new title, "The Message," because it looks like a smart, necessary meditation on positive HipHop and she's just all-around good people.
Speaking of Junot, I gotta read Edwidge Danticat's "Brother, I'm Dying" because I am a fan of hers and just associate her and Junot as a pair.
And lastly, I have to restart and FINISH Kola Boof's "Flesh And The Devil" and not just because I'm mentioned in it. ;-)

Emanuel; I read What If It Feels Good? and I really, really enjoyed it. It is a very well written debut novel and the storyline was quite interesting and different. It was an all night read for me. DJ McLaurin is the author and she tells me she is working on a sequel. |

Actually, "What If It Feels Good?" has been on my list for a while now, ever since I read the review on Rawsistaz. I thought about requesting a review copy but didn't want the obligation of having to finish it and write the review. So for now, I'm only using my library card instead of my credit card. However, since I've had a creative spark lately, I've been too busy working on my on stuff to finish anyone else's novels. Right now, "The Known World" is staring me in the face but I also hear my own characters calling me back to the manuscript. |
