I went to a seminar yesterday and learned
Poets and Writers offers grants for poets, fiction and creative nonfiction writers in NYC and Los Angeles www.pw.org.
For wide exposure and to get paid too, the faciliators recommended giving NEWSWEEK'S "My Turn" column a try.

I am working on a MY TURN piece about my brand new bi-racial niece. It's titled "What should We Call Her?"

I have tried MY TURN before...but been rejected. They pay around seven hundred and fifty dollars I think. So it is worth another try. LOL. I know someone who has been published. THe subject matter has to be something very, very broad, that most people can relate to.

"MY Turn" is really a writing format I would be comfortable in. Too bad I can't think of anything original to write about or I'd try my luck.

A_woman, I have trouble writing personal essays for some reason. I think I am too long winded and too willing to play the Devil's advocate. LOL. Any tips?

Cynique-From what I read, you are a fascinating personality. Just off the top of my head, you might consider writing about what it was like to lose your Grandson. Sadly, I bet lots of parents/grandparents would be able to relate.

Maybe so. Especially since he was killed on my 49th wedding anniversary, something which plunged me back to the day I was a happy carefree bride, not knowing what the future held.

Perhaps you can weave in how many young black men are murdered every day that barely raises a blip on the news radar.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss. Good luck if you decide to pursue this project. You are a very entertaining writer and thinker.

Robynmarie,

My best advice to you would be to write the essay from an angle that you feel really passionate about. What you feel will translate to the pages. It might be your fear of how your niece will be viewed/received by those she will encounter--both black and white. Any point of view that stirs your blood is best.

Write untile your tired let it flow. Then go back and edit.JMO.
