Award Winning Authors Omar Tyree & Evelyn Coleman Sign with Just Us Books
Tyree will publish first children's book with independent black press
East Orange, NJ (June 1, 2007) -- Just Us Books, leading publisher of Black-interest books for young people, has acquired the manuscripts of two noted Black autho rs: Omar Tyree and Evelyn Coleman. Just Us Books will publish 12 Brown Boys, Tyree’s first title for young people, in spring 2008. The book features twelve short stories, each focusing on a boy of color, and is targeted to readers 9 to 12. Just Us Books will release Coleman’s young adult title, As Opposed to What? in fall 2008.
“Both Omar and Evelyn are outstanding writers,” comments Wade Hudson, who along with his wife Cheryl, founded Just Us Books in 1988. “We are so pleased to have them as members of our family of authors and illustrators.”
Omar Tyree is a New York Times best-selling author, a 2001 NAACP Image Award recipient for Outstanding Literature in Fiction and a 2006 Phyllis Wheatley Award recipient. His 14 novels, which include the popular Flyy Girl, have sold more than 1.4 million copies worldwide. His newest adult title, The Last Street Novel, will be released this summer.
Evelyn Coleman has garnered success in both the children and adult markets. Her books for children have won numerous awards and honors including the Smithsonian Institute’s “Most Outstanding Children’s Book” for White Socks Only. Coleman’s adult novels have also won a loyal following. Freedom Train, her newest adult book, will be released in January 2008.
Adding to its diverse roster of books for children and young adults, Just Us Books will release three new titles in fall 2007: picture books One Million Men and Me and The Secret Olivia Told Me; and Path To My African Eyes, a young adult novel.
Written by Kelly Starling Lyons and illustrated by Peter Ambush, One Million Men and Me is a story about the 1996 Million Man March held in Washington, D.C., told from a little girl’s perspective. Author N. Joy and illustrator Nancy Devard show what happens when a friend passes on a secret in The Secret Olivia Told Me. In Path to My African Eyes, self acceptance, tolerance and racial prejudice are among the issues author Ermila Moodley tackles in her story about a young South African girl’s transition from her native land to Southern California.
Also scheduled for release this fall is Sink or Swim: African-American Lifesavers of the Outer Banks, by Carole Boston Weatherford. Originally published by Coastal Carolina Press, the middle reader title will be released under Sankofa Books, Just Us Books’ imprint dedicated to bringing Black classics back to the marketplace.
Just Us Books’ 2008 list includes Conk or Circumstances, a book of poetry for young adults by Tony Medina; Poetry From The Masters, Volume II: The Black Arts Movement, edited by Useni Eugene Perkins; and Poetry From the Masters, Volume III: The Black Arts Movement edited by Quraysh Ali Lansana.
Just Us Books is an independent, Black-owned publisher of books for young people that focus on African-American history, culture and experiences. Founded in 1988 by husband and wife team, Wade and Cheryl Hudson, the company’s titles range from concept books for Pre-K to novels for young adults.
