Listen people, this is serious. I have just been doing some checking on the Guggenheim Fellowships. These writing fellowships are awarded to writers every year. I have noticed recently that most of these fellowships go to white writers. What's going on, can anybody tell me? |

The Guggenheim application process is a bit tedious and can be slightly intimidating. As well, the criteria that applicants must be "advanced professionals" with "significant record of publication" also has some bearing if an author, white or otherwise, only has one or two works to their name. Especially if those one or two works didn't make anyone's best seller list or didn't have a significant impact in the literary market. I have no doubt that out of the average 3000 applications they recieve annually that very few minorities even bother to apply which leaves little chance that someone other than the white writers who do apply will be one of the 200 winners that is selected. But hey, go for it. All you have to lose is a few hours of your time and the price of a stamp.

It just seems to me Babygirl that so many talented minority writers out there and they don't get the opportunity to get some of that money. They are quite a few minority writers around that fit their criteria, and I am sure or rather something tells me that they do apply, but get the short end of the stick. I am not a writer myself but I do read several talented African American authors. |

I agree, babygirl, also, those awarding the money get to decide what criteria must be met in order to qualify. Many writers are not qualified for a number of fellowships or grants of any type because self published works, whether writers are AA or other, are not considered "significant publications"
There are a number of fellowships targeted for minorities... |

Does this mean that the powers that be are marginalizing our work? We have to do something about that then, don't we? |

Marginalized in what sense? I need more information... Also, The Guggenheim fellowship is not only for talented writers, but for all areas that can be described as fine art, so it is indeed very competitive.
To say that the powers that be for these type fellowships/grants don't have the right to set standards and qualifiers is the same as saying those who award shcolarships to colleges should hand them out to anyone who wants want without consideration of gpa or other criteria....IMO
