Hey Authors,

What are your personal rules for giving away your books or discounting them? Do you give freebies to relatives and book reviewers? Do you discount friends and co-workers? I look forward to reading your posts.

Outside of my allotted complimentary author's copies from my publisher, if I choose to purchase any of my own books from my publisher I get them at bookstore discount (40% off list price). If my family, friends, relatives, or co-workers want copies, I'd buy the books with my author's discount and sell to them what I'd paid for them. Keep it simple.

Book reviewers always receive free copies of the books, usually as ARCs. That's always been an industry custom.

I give traditional discounts to bookstores and online sites like Amazon and Barnes and Noble. When i sell direct i usually give a 30% discount on book. All reviewers and bookclubs get a freebie on first book...my way of trying to drum up interest and business.

Well, the parents, brothers and sisters definitely get free copies from me. I just ask them to spread the word, 'cause I know they ain't buying no books. Friends and co-workers can get discounts if they ask (they only pay a little more than my cost). If I give a copy away, it's to someone who can spread the word, like a radio station host, a bookclub president, or the owner of a telemarketing company for my business title. I recently gave a book to one of my sponsors since they've given me several gift certificates to give away at my signings. Keep in mind that my last two books were self-published, so there are no complimentary author's copies.

Greetings,

Emanuel, excellent question. I give away freebies to book reviewers, editors, book publicists, newspaper reporters and radio hosts.

Peace
Afrika Midnight Asha Abney
