An excerpt from GHETTOHEAT® by H I C K S O N
Introduction written by J A S O N P O O L E
A GHETTOHEAT® PRODUCTION

Before you dig into this hot gumbo of soul poems, I’d first like to give you a brief history of who I am and why I’m here. My name is Jason Poole, Essence best-selling author of Larceny.

One day while walking the prison yard amongst peers, I noticed a guy carrying in his hand, a book with a bold book cover having a run-on design with the word “GHETTOHEAT®” written all over it. For me being an author, I was somewhat inquisitive and intrigued with curiosity of the contents in the book. Being though the cover itself stood out, along with the title, I was sure to find myself in another world of “hood” story fiction.

Therefore, I reached out to the guy and asked may I see it. As I fumbled through the pages and various sections within the Table of Contents, I quickly came to the realization that these weren’t chapters yet titles, as this wasn’t a novel. Yet, it was for the first time in my life that I saw an edgy “ghetto” version of a poetry book.

As I began to read, I found myself going through various mood behaviors: laughing, becoming angry, saddened and just simply getting into certain poems. Some were flashbacks of a hustler’s life—I could easily relate to them. There were other scenarios that I couldn’t relate to, but after reading them, the selections helped me understand...

Within a few short hours, I surprisingly finished the whole poetry book. Mostly in prison, one would take poetry as another form of communicating. But with GHETTOHEAT®, I saw a difference, this isn’t just a poetry book, it’s a book of reality. This book is really a connection of where we come from, living in the ghetto. It sort of reminds me of “J.J. Evans” and his paintings from the old TV series, “Good Times”.

As I closed the book, I then searched on the back for the author’s bio. I wanted to know who this guy was with this brilliant idea, one who had the courage to publish a poetry book, during a time where Hip-Hop fiction is in full demand. As I read the bio, I came to find out that this guy is no other than “HICKSON”, the newest dude in the game.

Not only does he writes poetry, but HICKSON writes novels also. But what caught my eye was that this man was an aspiring publisher as well. I looked all through his book to see the other novels he’s published, as I continued my searched. I noticed that the only book he’s published thus far was this poetry book, GHETTOHEAT®, although HICKSON’s first fictional novel, SKATE ON! was in the back of his poetry book as an excerpt.

While I continued to read his bio, I notice that HICKSON has degree in Advertisement and Marketing. Instantly, a light bulb turned on in my head, as I thought about what I needed at the time. Although my novel was doing well, I still felt as though my future projects should be treated with such care.

I was thinking about self-publishing my next novel, then I thought about it, put two and two together and said to myself: Here I am in prison, yet, as an published author on the Essence best-sellers list, and here he is, as a publisher who’s seeking authors, yet his credentials speak for itself.

I then took it upon myself to write this guy, “HICKSON” and make him an offer he couldn’t refuse… After several weeks of constant communication and getting to know each other’s goals, HICKSON agreed to accept my offer, but under one condition: only if I produce quality work.

That was the easy part. Now, here we are, months later and several projects slated to be published in the near future, with a roster of works set to take the literary world by storm!

I’m proud to introduce to you, a man with great vision and passion for what he does, a publisher who’s about his work, and a business partner and friend one can depend on—as well as a creative writer of many fictional novels.

So dig into this book of poetry, and feel the GHETTOHEAT®, as HICKSON takes you through a voyage into poetry at its unique height.

One love,

Jason Poole, 2006
