On July 24 a mid-summer celebration of books and authors at “Books @ the Pier” will be held on Pier 63 at West 23rd Street. The event, a benefit for the non-profit literacy program, “Books Through Bars”, will feature authors Walter Mosley, Herb Boyd, Amy Goodman, Terrie Williams, Juan Gonzalez, Tim McLoughlin, Toby Thompkins, Darren Coleman, Jimmie Briggs, Kalisha Buckhanon and Deborah Mathis, among others. Two major panel discussions will take place along with selected readings from noon – 5:30 pm. 12:15 pm - Lindamichelle Baron - Mistress of Ceremony, poet, author 12:30 pm - Terrie Williams - A Plentiful Harvest: Creating Balance and Harmony Through the Seven Living Virtues 12:40 pm - Kalisha Buckhanon - Upstate 12:50 pm - Jimmie Briggs - Innocents Lost 1:00 pm - Darren Coleman - Don't Ever Wonder 1:10 pm - Tim McLoughlin - Brooklyn Noir 2: The Classics 1:20 pm - Toby Thompkins - Real Lives of Strong Black Women 1:30 pm - 2:45 pm "Voices Through Bars" A panel of authors formerly incarcerated sharing their writing experiences both in front of and behind prison walls. Dr. Divine Pryor is the moderator. Panelists include: Michael B. Jackson (How to Do Good After Prison" A Handbook for the "Committed Man"), Eric Waters (Black Shadows and Through the White Looking Glass), Evans Hopkins (Life After Life: A Story of Rage and Redemption) 3:00 - 4:15 pm "The Media, Incarceration and Public Policy- Is There a Connection?" A panel of authors, journalists and experts discuss the impact of the media and public policy on incarceration rates. Eddie Ellis is the moderator.
