Should Sharpton Criticize Hip Hop?
by Darren Hutchinson (more posts)

This has been the primary argument advanced by defenders of Imus -- how dare Sharpton condemn Imus but not hip hop for its misgony and other offenses. Pat Buchanan is the latest person to make such arguments, in an argument which argues that Imus was "lynched." Of course, this is a "reverse discrimination" argument in disguise. It goes like this: black people get to do things that white people cannot do; blacks can call black women ho's but not white men; this is unfair and is akin to an antiwhite lynching. Whites are the victims of discrimination; criticizing racism harms whites. Sounds familiar, right? I see one major factual problem with this argument in this setting: SHARPTON HAS IN FACT CRITICIZED HIP HOP! And often. When I was a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania several years ago, Sharpton gave a speech during which he criticized hip hop lyrics and mentioned that he has met with artists and done the same. So, in the interest of advancing knowledge, I offer the following links (one of these links involves a black artist OUTSIDE of hip hop). Question: Why are the defenders of Imus/critics of Sharpton in the dark on his history as a hip hop critic? Are they only concerned when he criticizes whites, rather than blacks? What do you think?

"We put the 'I.N.G.' in your bling bling [and] have no choice but then to try and [take] 'the' "I.N.G." out your bling bling by withdrawing our support commercially of your records and your use of airwaves.”

hip hop as a catalyst for his views)

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1355/is_26_98/ai_68018839 Quote: "Don't let some record executive tell you that cursing out your mama is in style. Anytime you perpetuate a slave mentality that desecrates women and that desecrates our race in the name of a record.... I consider you a well-paid slave."

http://www.bet.com/Music/Archives/BET.com+-+Al+Sharpton+Disses+Rap+Against+Women +1081.htm Quote: " I had a discussion with a few rappers a while back, and I asked them why they use so much profanity and are so misogynistic in their music. 'Rev, we're like a mirror to society,' one of the rappers said. 'We are merely reflecting what we see, he wrote of his encounter. "'Well, I don't know about you, but I use a mirror to correct what's wrong with me,'" I told them. 'I don't look in the mirror to see my hair messed up and my teeth need brushing and just walk out of the house that way. I use the mirror to fix me.'"

PS: There are many other examples on the web. Education is a powerful tool....

"good! maybe these white men can finally stop flooding blcaks with all the rap trash weve been wanting this ugly hiphop stopped long ago!"

Yep! It's the white mans fault. No doubt about it. He is directly (and primarily) responsible for making these confused and horribly misguided young black men gravitate towards the thug culture, impregnate black women and walk away, gang bang and assault other blacks (and anyone else who unfortunately happens to be in their physical proximity). If the white man would stop, so would the brothers. No white man -no gangsta thug social pathology and denigration of women. Oh well......

White people are quick to point the finger at our rap subculture (once again HUGE difference between thug rap and HIP HOP, the two are NOT interchangeable!) being at fault for all of our woes, but choose to ignore the very same socio deviant behaviors in their own culture that are just as problematic as those of rap artists. HEAVY METAL being cheif among them promoting drug use and suicide! Rampant devil worship, and vampirism to name a couple more. Why don't white people focus on their social ills as much as they do black peoples? Why to do so would point up chinks in their almighty white armor

Yukio,

I applaud Sharpton's decrying gangsta rap. But I also notice how Sharpton appears to wants to REFORM the misguided BLACK lads of hip-hop while he surely wants to FIRE the evil WHITE Imus.

White people are really not quick to point their fingers at the rap-sub culture. They are more like indifferent by-standers, bemused at how blacks spit and rhyme about slappin hos and killin niggas. The young ones even buy the records to get vicarious thrills. And citing what white crazy people do as a rebuttal to black self-destructiveness is counter-productive. Blacks need to get past this tit-for-tat playground mentality and concentrate of cleaning up their own act because this is what will benefit them. Let white people stew in their own troubles. Their serial killers and anorexic girls and heavy metal dope heads are not what cause black problems.

I never said that white peoples ills cause black peoples problems--I just stated the fact that they suffer from sociopathic illness just as much as anyone else and we ALL need to focus on the fact that each culture suffers the effects of these subcultures and that these subcultures---rap/heavymetal et,al ARE NOT a reflection of the community at large.

If black people can understand that a subculture like heavy metal or vampirism does not accurately capture and reflect thier ENTIRE white culture, Then why can't white people understand that the thug rap subculture is NOT REFLECTIVE of our ENTIRE black culture???? It should be COMMON SENSE. But hear white people tell it all black people go around calling women hos and bitches just because it's in a rap song! Go figure!!!

I don't aree with your analogy that all white people believe that the "thug rap sub-culture is reflective of the entire black culture". Whites are very aware of the black middle-class and this segment of the black population is who whites want other blacks to act like because they consider the black middleclass non threatening. The problem with the gangsta sub culture is not so much about how its images mislead white people; it's about how the bling and violence mesmerize black kids.

right, ABM. Sharpton appreciates the difference between the general [music companies and the white establishment] and the rank-and-file [rappers].

My problem in general is the tension between our ability to live as humans [this including the good and bad, beautiful and the ugly] and being able to point the finger at the evildoing of the beast [white supremacy].

Its like, in order to condemn the greater evil of white supremacy, we have to ultimately be perfect, superhuman. This leads to the oppressor identifying our human frailties as a reason legitimize their own monumental attacks upon us.

You finally get it, huh, Yukio? Welcome to the realm of existenialism. LOL. Once you realize that America is not Utopia and that you can't expect justice from those who you accuse of being unjust, you can stop agonizing, can even exercise your freedom to blow of steam by condeming white supremacy. That's allowed.

YUKIO, you hit the nail right on the head with this one! This is EXACTLY what has been going on with this IMUS madness and the white community!
