How timely! I was just about to post this reallly bizarre thing that happened to me over the week-end! A while back, I fired off a letter to Oprah, never expecting my rant to be given any attention and then out of the blue, I receive a phone call from a member of her staff asking me if I would be interested in coming on her show and confronting Oprah about my complaints, most of which had to do with her book selections and African schools and pat fomulas for success. Can you believe this? The staff member said that Oprah wanted to not only give equal time to her critics but to give herself an opportunity answer these detractors because they are becoming more vocal and she thinks they are judging her unfairly. I'm not sure when this taping will be but I will get back later with the details. Still reeling!

Cynique,

I just finished the latest Oprah book, The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Although it might be a perfect read for a teenager or someone who doesn't read that much (and then again, you might give them The Martian Chronicles or Of Mice and Men instead) -- I just can't believe how the critics have fawned all over this book, which has got to be one of the most highly acclaimed novels of recent years, albeit one of the most simplistic and least challenging books I've ever read.

SPOILER ALERT In the aftermath of the nuclear apocalypse, a man and his 10 year old boy head south along "the road," encountering and avoiding bands of marauders and scavenging for canned goods in abandoned houses. When they find a ham, for instance, the narrator says something like: It was rich. And good. And that's about it!
END SPOILER

A lot of the dialogue goes like this:

We have to go, the man said. We can't stay here.
Where are we going, papa?
I don't know.
Okay.

If that kid had said okay one more time, I would have smacked him. I'm telling you, I've never seen such drama over a can of corn. I've only read one other book by Cormac McCarthy, All the Pretty Horses, which won the National Book Award in the '90s, although it didn't do anything for me.

Maybe Oprah should just set up direct wire transfers into Cormac's bank account.

PS You should read it. Don't take my word for it.

I'll take your word for it. Why does she mostly promote these books (the few times I've been aware of these promotions), that are full of angst and suffering of some kind. Does she promote books from different genres, such as scifi or non fiction?

Oprah has the right to do WHAT EVER
SHE WANTS WITH HER MONEY.
People can critize her all they want
BUT GUESS WHAT? IT'S HER MONEY.

Watch. Cynique will fall to her knees, grasping the O's hand and squealing "I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!"

At least get you some free donuts from the green room.

Wrong, Chrishayden! Were I to ever appear on Oprah's show, I'd try very hard to raise my shackled wrists and tear the duct tape off my mouth so I could rant.

Hey Cynique:

Seriously now.

Last night laying up in a stupor, I heard this old Gospel song that went "I hear somebody crying. Crying in the street" (it went on about praying, etc).

Do you remember this song and who did it? It was probably out in the late 40's early 50's.

Sorry, never heard of the song. Gospel music wasn't a staple in the places frequented by sinners like me in the 1950s. While drinking our communion wine, we'd be diggin Jazz and Doo-Wop.

You must redeem yourself by ranting to Harpo Studios about how we think Ms. Uppity is a snobbish phoney boar (and a bore too) so that you can get on her show.

You WILL be sporting my tattoo :-)

Chris - Why don't you search the net for the title of that song. It's not that hard.

(I thought since I was here with my own people, people who are all the time talking BLACK and AFROCENTRIC and AFROFUTURISTIC and sh*t, I wouldn't have to go to MR.CHARLIE to learn about my musical heritage.

I was wrong.

The pain. The pain.
