CHICAGO — Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson said Thursday he's backing Democrat Barack Obama in his presidential bid, giving his support to a new generation of black politicians. "He has my vote," the Rev. Jackson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
Jackson sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, winning 13 primaries and caucuses in 1988. His son, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois, has already endorsed Obama.
Jackson represents a different era of black politician, battle-tested by the civil rights struggles of the 1960s with Martin Luther King Jr.
Obama, 45, is biracial _ his white mother was from Kansas, his father Kenyan _ and educated at Ivy League universities. In his best-selling memoir, "Dreams From My Father," Obama said he couldn't even get in the door at national civil rights groups when he was younger. He wrote letters to them after graduating from Columbia University but said none responded.
In a statement responding to Jackson's support, Obama said, "This campaign has been about giving hope since Day One and I am proud to have the support of my friend Jesse Jackson. It is because people like Jesse ran that I have this opportunity to run for president today."
Jackson could help Obama to secure the support of black voters, a critical bloc in the Democratic primaries.
Jackson has a long history with one of Obama's chief rivals, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband former President Clinton. He counseled the two when the president's affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky became public.
But Jackson said his history with the Clintons doesn't complicate his decision to back his home state senator, calling Obama Illinois' "favorite son."
"It's not awkward at all," he said, adding, "I don't owe a debt to any of them."
Jackson said he will support the winner of the Democratic nomination, whether it's Obama or not, and he is talking to other candidates because of his agenda that includes the war on poverty and voter protection.
Although Jackson failed in his bids for the White House in 1984 and 1988, he said that helped make it easier for not only blacks, but women and other minorities to run for president and function at the highest levels of government.
"We broke down barriers," Jackson said.
Jackson said Obama has not asked him to campaign for him and he is not in Obama's inner circle of advisers and fundraisers.
"I just have an appreciation of him," Jackson said.

I know this goes counter to logic and reason.
I know, at it's core, this is counter to even my own principals. I'm going to make an exception in this case.
Seriously I believe Obama can do as good a job any of the more recent men. He is smart, charimatic and will hopefully surround himself with a cabinet of quality people.
I want Black people in the white house before I die.
I think this will help Black people more than any social program.

Unless there's some catastrophic change of some sort, I'm voting for Obama. And Jesse has NO bearing, yay or nay, upon my doing such.
But if Jackson will swing a few confused Black foks (aka Tonyas) into the direction of supporting Obama then, well, welcome aboard the Good Ship Obama, Jesse! |

It'll be interesting to see whether/how Jackson's endorsement of Obama will effect Al Sharpton and other so-called Black leaders.
Btw: Jesse's based in Chicago. He knows he knows his NOT supporting Barack might seriously JEPARDIZE his standing and position here with the good citizens of Illinois. |

Not sure what our being Black has to do with the outcome of the Democratic primaries. Also, I am surprised, Chris, that you seem to be endorsing such a passive stance with regard to the political process. Sit around and wait to see who the Dems endorse before getting involved in the race? Why? Well, maybe that attitude is just part of your on-line persona, or something. |

Jesse Jackson is left with the familiar option of joining those whom he cannot whip. Jesse had great presidential ambitions for his son, but Obama ran rough shod over them. If Obama doesn't make it to the finals, it will be because of his staff. I think they are starting to drop the ball in too many instances. Surely they should've made a definite health care plan a part of his repetoire since Obama was left tongue-tied on a panel when he had nothing concrete to offer for comparison with the plans Hillary and Edwards have presented. I think Obama should go with his gut feelings more because his brain trust is too busy trying to give him an "everyman" make-over. |

(Obama is the Great Black Hope who will Head for the Hills. I am just getting you all ready for it.)
I think Obama should go with his gut feelings more because his brain trust is too busy trying to give him an "everyman" make-over.

I think this is political sleight of hand.
JJ endorses BO now, figuring BO will not get the Democractic nom. In the general election, JJ will support his ole pal Hill. I bet Bill and Hill are in on this whole charade.
You should watch, "Unbought and Unbossed" the documentary about Shirley's Chisholm's run for the WH. Shirley talks about about public posturing and back door manuvering among Democrats. And in her day, Shirley had much more support that BO has now and black Dems wound up stabbing her in the back.
