In a move that surprised many within academia, Bennett College trustees have named noted commentator and economist Dr. Julianne Malveaux president of the women’s college, effective June 1. Malveaux is best known for her numerous appearances on CNN and BET, and her columns have appeared regularly in USA Today, Ms. Magazine, Essence and this publication, Diverse: Issues In Higher Education. Malveaux replaces retiring Bennett College President Johnnetta Cole, whose leadership is credited with bringing Bennett back from the brink of deaccreditation and fiscal insolvency.

Though many unfamiliar with Bennett’s presidential search progress expressed surprise upon hearing of the selection, Malveaux was received enthusiastically by hundreds of cheering students, faculty and staff members who assembled on campus Monday morning for her formal introduction...

Does malveaux have any actually EXPERIENCE running a school, ANY school?

If not, I can foresee this possibly descending into a scenario similar to what happen with the NAACP and its former president Gordon.

Could be, ABM. Tho I hope not.

It seems to me these days some universities are choosing presidents who can be rainmakers in terms of raising money instead of choosing more traditional folks from the ranks of academia. Maybe they figure there are enough other positions for people actually running the "school" aspects (e.g., a buncha provosts and regents and department heads, etc).

Another important function of college presidents seems to be being a good "public face" for the institution.

Anyway, I wish her and the college well. I guess only time will tell if treating institutions of higher education in more of a business/corporation model is a wise move or not.

Yvettep,

Maybe Malveaux will draw some extra dollars. I've seen this rainmaker approach attempted at HBUC's. Unfortunately, though, what often happens is the management, staff and faculty resent and resist someone who has little-to-no experience running a school and the president flees in disgust.

I wish Malveaux and Bennett well, though.

Surely Dr. Malveaux credentials favor her having the expertise and competency to perfom her duties, or to at least have enough aplomb to delegate authority as she goes through her on the job training.

Wasn't Eisenhower a University president? Robert E. Lee?

If you can be an idiot and be President of the United States, you can be anything.

Oh, ABM, why do the heck you care about Ms. Malveaux? She's very talented and credentialed unlike you. Maybe you're mad because you didn't get the job. Ha Ha Ha!
