In the UK they are marking the 200th annivesary of the abolition of slavery with several television programmes, festivals et cetera.

But do you think it is time for blacks in the western hempispehere to get a 'sorry' from africans and arabs who introduced the slave trade and who sold their 'cousins' into slavery?

And should there be more done since diffrent form of slaves are still evident in africa (such as prostitution rings)?

Latina_wi,

I do find it interesting how the US & Europe and Whites are made to account for slavery while Africa and African Black & Arab Africans are not.

That's exactly my point ABM. I really do wonder why blacks in the americas insist in an apology off the 'white man' but hardly challenge their african massas.
The only people I have really seen do this is west indians, but no one else really.

In a way, I can understand europeans vieiwing the slave trade as a business transaction. They must have viewed it in the sense that - these people are being sold by their own, so essentially they are viewed as worthless. They had no obligation to us.

However, it is an entirely different thing when your OWN view you as so unworthy they would sell you and place your life in grave danger.

That upsets me and I think, due to the slave trade still being alive and kicking in Africa, it should be addressed more. Africa, in my opinion, is often viewed as the western world's concious therefore accountable for nothing - and this is bullshit to me.

Lol, you know what is ironic? We were viewed as the most lowly and ethnically inept when we were sold to europeans. Look how far we have come.

If I remember Kola correctly, Africa/Africans already apologized for their part in slavery. And let’s not forget. Many Africans fought against our being sold into slavery, there were wars to prevent this. Even women rose up & fought!

When was this apology? And the big celebration marking the event?

I don't doubt there were probably ructions about us people being sold into slavery by OTHER africans, I don't doubt women rose up against slavery...but you know, apology isn't on the same scale of other people who took part in slavery and actually seem heartfelt sorry.

Tonya,

Like Latina_wi, I don't recall witnessing some great Africa/African apology for slavery. Not sayin it didn't happen. But the sh*t must not have been televised here.

On second though I remember Kola saying something much differnt than what Tanya said wasnt it the festivals in Nigeria and Senegal for the "stolen slaves" she posted about? I remember the story of Queen Nzinga and this other one:http://www.suppressedhistories.net/articles/africanqueens.html
GHANA

"If you the men of Ashanti will not go forward, then we will. We the women will. I shall call upon you my fellow women. We will fight the white men. We will fight until the last of us falls in the battlefield."

---Ya Asantewa, an Ashanti queen who led the resistence to British colonial rule in Ghana. She succeeded in the short run, but the Ashanti were heavily outgunned.

Abm,

I THINK that's what Kola said, I'm not 100% sure. If I remember correctly it is, but I don't want to put words in her mouth.

I'm not waiting for an apology for what their dead ancestors did anymore than I'd be willing to apologize for anything my dead ancestor may have done.

If they really want to atone, they should treat the living with respect.

It doesn't even make sense for us to get all up in arms about the past that neither we nor the descendants of slave owners were responsible for or canchange, and meanwhile IN THE PRESENT they treat us like crap and we ignore it.

That's just it, Renata, they don't respect the living AND they are still profitting and benefitting today from the deeds of their dead ancestors. An apology would only be the TIP of the iceberg, which, in my view, is why they don't do it. Those who have, apologize but NOTHING MORE. Without actions and some level of reparations to follow the apology, the apology on its own merit is meaningless.

It is not even about wanting an apology Renata, because I agree. It happened to my POOR ancestors...not to me. We should learn from the past, not procrastinate over it.

However, I wonder at the people who insist that the white man HAS to give them an apology when they don't insist of the same of africans who still practise slavery.

And maybe if africans admitted blame then we could help deal with the child slave labour in Ghana for example.

Also, I am GLAD that Tony Blair didn't apologise for slavery. Why should he?

Not sur what schools you all went but wasn't the black folks doing the "selling" sold right behing the ones who they sold? In other words I though the "trade" changed to when the whites invaded the African kings and them kings and their families were sold right into slavery as well so all the bad guys is with us anyway right?

I'm pretty ambivalent to notions of apologies and reparations. Because then to think what results from them won't amount to much.

But I do think as long as racism/colorism exists, there will be cries for some forms of recompense.

Why don't they just suggest that everybody go see "Amazing Grace" the recently-released movie about Englishman William Wilburforce's valiant fight to abolish slavery in the British empire. The movie could use the business since it didn't make a lot of money.

Many West African countries have made official apologies for slavery. Among them are Ghana and Benin. Ghana has a well known festival each year to commemorate pan-africanism and the slave trade. If you haven't heard of these things it is probably a result of overall lack of knowledge of West Africa rather than these things being shrouded in secrecy. To be honest Benin did this mostly to encourage tourism from the descendants of slaves (because most Beninese honestly feel no regret) so we've done a lot to publicize it.

Tanya your right she posted about the annual "stolen children" festival in Nigeria, Ghana, Benin and Senegal. I didn't realize it was an apology but I knew it was free house/college education for African Americans returning to live in Africa.

Spare me the BS. It is nothing to do with a lack of knowledge in general but the fact that west african hasn't made as much amends as it should.

Latina_wi what kind of amends do you propose West Africans make ? In your original post you said you should get a sorry. Many West African countries have made official apologies to slave descendants. However you were not aware of that or you wouldn't have started this thread....hence lack of knowledge. Would you prefer I call it ignorance?

Arent they giving much more than just apology if they offering free home, college eductation and citizenship to diaspora blacks of slave heritage thats more than just an apology IMO LatinaWi and please tell me what "ships" did the Africns build during slavery? Once more time LatinaWi, the West Africns left behind in Africa are not likely the ones doing the selling but were colonized after the sellers were sold behind the people they sold.
