Vanessa Williams Gets Hollywood Star

LOS ANGELES -- Many predicted Vanessa Williams would fade into obscurity when she gave up her Miss America crown because of a scandal over nude photographs, but her star shone brightly Monday.
Williams received the 2,331st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Fellow cast members from the TV show "Ugly Betty," in which she plays a villainous magazine editor, showed up to cheer for her at the ceremony in front of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
"We were so happy to get Vanessa," said Salma Hayek, the show's executive producer. "She is brilliant because she is so nasty on the show, but in reality she is the sweetest person."
Williams stepped down as the first black Miss America in 1984 after Penthouse magazine published nude, sexually explicit photographs of her taken several years earlier. In the years since, she has sung on Broadway, released Grammy-nominated albums and acted on screens both big and small.
On Monday, she thanked fellow "Betty" cast members for attending the ceremony on their day off.
"I love working with these people," she said. "I also want to thank my family for allowing me to live my dreams. The sun didn't shine today, but my heart is shining."
Others who attended the ceremony included producer Peter Gruber, "Betty" co-star Rebecca Romijn and Williams' brother, Chris, a cast member on the new Fox series "The Wedding Bells."

Vanessa is certainly the comeback kid. After her exposure by Penthouse magazine, she went on to become the only Miss America to achieve lasting fame and fortune, and eventual respectibility. |

'Ugly Betty' is not as good as it was hyped up to be (though it is enjoyable and easy to watch) but Williams is certainely very fiesty in that show, she's brilliant!

LOL, this is going to sound like I am being pretty nasty Tonya but bear with me!
The whole Sharon Stone showing her, ahem, kitty was more to do with her seeing an opportunity for being infamous and casuing a stir. Therefore she would become popular, make a name for herself in Hollywood and get roles. People are still talking about it today and Sharon Stone is still called up for roles now because of the part she played in 'Basic Instinct'.
Some actresses are not given these opportunties or just don't take them, due to the game that she is in and how she has modelled herself as an actress (sex bomb, sedructress, sexy) I think it was almost clever that Stone agreed to baring all and therefore she does deserve a star on the 'Walk of Fame'. Maybe not for the Nobel Peace Prize lol, but deffo for the walk of fame as she created a furore for herself and attracted fame for the film.

And yup, I agree with you about Vanessa Williams probably getting roles because not only she is a great actress and very beautiful but she is also euro enough to 'fit in' but that's Hollywood and I kind of think that blacks in Hollywood et cetera are more discrimantory when it comes to colour than the whites.
I am not detracting from Vanessa Williams the she is gorgeous and good at what she does tho! |

There are "ifs" that figure into the success of most celebrities. The ones who thrived were those who were savy enough to be able to take advantage of the opportunities that came their way. People took Vanessa Williams seriously enough for her to have maintained a 20-year career in the entertainment industry. I always gave her and her old nappy headed self big ups because she never went on the defensive about her Miss America fiasco. She moreoreless shrugged her shoulders, handed the crown back, and kept on truckin. U Go, Girl! |

I don't think EITHER Vanessa or Sharon deserve Star on the Walk of Hollywood. Because, really, I don't see ANYTHING they've done (including BOTH of them showing their cQQchies) that warrants such recognition. |

First you have to apply for a star. Then they vote you in. That is how the process works.
That being said I love Vanessa L. Williams too. She is very funny on "Ugly Betty".
However, Vanessa is to me the very "personification" of the term "High Yella Snotty Nosed Heifa". |

What makes you think she is stuck-up, Serena? I never get that impression from her. She comes across relatively down to earth.
I've never found her to be THAT beautiful, if at all, she's quite average looking. But I do think it's cool that her eyes change colors; last time I saw her on television they were blue. |

She seems extremely stuck-up to me!! I don't know but I've always got that "vibe" from her no matter how "down to earth" she tries to come off But that is my opinion!

You are so blinded by your dislike for the people you refer to as "high-yellow snotty nosed heifas", that you can't see straight, Serenasailor. Vanessa Williams is in her early 40s. But do you see any crow's feet, frown marks a double chin, a saggy neck, or bags under her eyes? Yes, the picture posted has probably benefitted from air brushing, but on TV she doesnt look vastly different. Make-up? Yes. But make-up can only do so much. Your face has to be a good "canvass" in order for it to respond to the artistry of make-up; the contours of Vanessa's face are almost perfect, her skin tone evenand smooth. And I'm always curious about the appearance of somebody who calls herself "Brownbeauty", but who routinely dismisses celebrities as just being average-looking. |

Cynique, to be fair.....black women typically don't get crow's feet even into their 50's and 60's, or saggy necks even into their 70's.
Regarding Vanessa.....I'm neither impressed nor repulsed by her. Not gorgeous, not ugly......like most people.
When you really think about it, there really is no large number of GEORGEOUS people, even among the famous. Among the women, I can really think of only maybe 2...and according to you all, one has had a lot of work done (Vivica Fox....of course the other is Sheryl Lee Ralph). The others may have a gorgeous feature or two, but overall are not gorgeous. (Diana Ross's and Chaka Khan's HAIR should be considered the epitome, the pinnacle and the standard of beauty for any race...and I'm still trying to get mine SOMEWHAT like theirs.)

Vanessa is attractive but has some f'ked up skin. Actually in some pics you can see the crows feet and the wrinkles on her face and chest. But I digress...
It's sad that people won't let go of the Penthouse scandal that happened almost 23 years ago. Thank God Traci Lords lied about her age, and hence, distribution of that Penthouse issue would land you in jail for child porn. I think Vanessa is more thankful for that than anyone. She has had a decent career. Think: what black female (high-yella or pitch black) has had an awesome, long (at least two decade-spanning acting career) in Hollywood? Can you name five? |

And beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Vanessa obviously looks good in the eyes of a lot of beholders because she is generally considered a great looking babe. |

When did I say she looked old? You mentioned that she doesn't have crow's feet or a sagging neck at her age......neither does the majority of black women. So that's hardly a pointer that she looks good for her age. If those are what's looked for, then most black women look good for their age in their 50's and 60's.
Lady, either moan about something I actually said or look for someone else to tussle with. A whole post about how whether or not someone looks old (and I never said such)? You can do better than that. |

Agreed Enchanted even though I don't think she is ugly in fact I think she used to be cute. However, she didn't age very well. Also, I always thought that Jasmin Guy was the mose average-looking bi-racial woman in the WORLD!!!
But Vanessa didn't age as well as Sheryl Lee Ralph, Angela Bassett, and Tina Turner.

vanessa williams is still nice looking especially for her age. also factor in that she's a mother of like a 5 kids or something like that too. she has had a great career thus far and will probably continue to do so when she's like 70 playing someones grandmother or something. she also pushed out a couple of good easy listening albums too. she definitely deserves a star, and you don't get to be where she is in life just being average. |

I've always believed Vanessa Williams to be a mildly pretty, mediocre actress and singer. And I believe if she did NOT have blue-ish eyes and (ironically) had her nudie pics NOT been exposed by Penhouse, most of us would have forgotten who she is by now.

Those are Vanessa's real eye color(s). I think she said her eyes are 30% green, and some crap like that. The color changes depending on what color clothes she wears, too. I find that rather fascinating. |
